Help!! have a 1974 Industrial 140 tractor that has a fast hitch which I use to mow with a MOTT fine cut mower. Today I was mowing when I heard a loud noise and tractor shut down. I thought maybe mower got bound up. No it rotated free.Placed tractor in neutral and with clutch pushed in, tractor started like normal. Try to let clutch out and tractor acted like in gear with brake on and shut down. Same with all gears. Placed in neutral and tractor rolled fine. As long as clutch pushed in , runs fine.
Any suggestions???

Sounds like something bound up on the transmission input shaft. More than likely will need to be split to repair.

My Oliver 1655 did that with less than a 1000 hrs. on it.

This isn't a clutch problem. It's something in the transmission, as in some component that turns anytime the clutch is engaged.

Could be the input shaft bearing or gear, the counter shaft, PTO, hydraulic pump, etc.

I would start by accessing as much or the transmission as possible through the top cover and inspection covers, looking for anything abnormal.
