Not volunteering any more

For the last year I've did volunteer work at the county recycling facility. didn't get paid, but they let me take home any thing I wanted. They charged people when they brought in large items, such as appliances, furniture, lawn mowers, etc.. Then they had a scrapper come in and haul the stuff off and he charged them for it. I was making pretty good money selling to the scrap yard and fixing lawn mowers and selling them. Tried to explain to the gal running the facility that the scrapper was cheating her. She said she knew this guy and he told her that his price was the best deal she was going to get. Guess someone finally got her to understand that thing could be sold and not have to pay someone to take it. They won't let me take stuff home any more.

Since you aren't getting paid, you might explain to the lady, your pay will be still able to take things home. Seams fair to me. Stan

Yeah I have that problem, but I was raised to try and help people out. Although some time it does come around and bite you in the butt.

Never trust those scraper guys, lots of crooks in that business. When in doubt get all info from the scrapies.

10 years ago we had a cleanup at where I worked, filled a small dumptruck with stuff, mostly steel fixtures that were obsolete. Guy, never called me, never got a dime from them.
Had some guys come into my current place, looked like half breed Mexicans, tried to steel copper wire on coils. Had to kick them out.

Mabey she decided that the easiest way to have you cease doing her job for her was to have you stop taking stuff home, hence you're not around anymore.
Around here the scrap yards dont' really want 'white' goods. They'll take the stuff if you dump it off and that's about the extent of it.
What scrap is worth is highly dependant on where you are and what distance it is to market... and who actually has the monopoly on the local scrap market. Around here there's really only one game in town, they pay what they pay which isn't much... and if you want rid of the stuff you take what they pay. Sounds like you're in a similar market.

A volunteer should not expect anything in return...sounds to me like you were trading your labor for material things. No givvy, no worky :(
