We went on a tractor road run for about 12 miles on Saturday. We travelled for about 2 hours from my place, down across the border to Virginia in County Cavan. The scenery is spectacular but the homes are even better.....and this is supposed to be one of the poorer counties in Ireland????? Just some shots before my camera batteries died!.........Sam

ery nice 'slums'! Beats Detroit. Guess folks there actually work for a living!

(quoted from post at 20:45:13 07/07/14) Yep,
They sure look poor to me.

I wish I was that poor.
I can find many fine houses in the hills of Appalachia as well.
But there is plenty of poverty as well.
I doubt that the organizers of the ride would route you thru the slums and such. Would not be as nice of a ride.

IH2444- I live in eastern KY on a old, out of the way, two lane state route. No major connections between two spots. Just an old road.

Can you believe this? I have seen tour buses pass my place all the time. I reckon some people want to see what poverty, in the USA, really looks like.

Yep, I emailed you but got no reply. Did you get it?

IH2444- I just checked and did receive the e-mail. I don't check my e-mail too often...been kinda busy.

I still like to try to get to Billy Rays every now and then just for the nostalgia. My parents picture was hung in the dinning area before the fire burnt the first Billy Rays up.

But, I can make the best replica of the original 'Pool Room" burger you have ever eaten. I usually make them about once a week..you want the recipe?

BTW, I sent you an e-mail.

People who can afford to take tours and anyone else who is well heeled enough to travel frequently, SHOULD travel through Appalachia, and other underdeveloped areas! If it only made one out of ten to think and act, it would make a great difference.

Enjoyed the photos, Sam. Nice little bungalows there. Travelers tip: Always carry a spare set of batteries! (Don't ask how I came to this conclusion). LOL

I thought the problem was people from other countries coming in and building those bungalows driving prices up so locals can't afford to live there.

Didn't see garages in most of those houses. Vehicles are usually the homeowners 2nd largest investment so why do they let the vehicles set outside in the weather????

In our neighborhood, you can see vehicles worth $50K to $100K sitting in the driveways as they are protecting $500 worth of junk inside the garage. Doesn't seem too smart to me.

Most houses being built in my area are very similar. We live an hour's commute from the Boston beltway high tech area.

Me likeum pictures, in the 12th picture, is that an Irish setter?

When I was in the army, there was a Sweedish guy that had an Irish accent. Could never figure that one oot.

There are a lot of contrasts like that in Detroit. Look at the east side, one of the worst areas of Detroit backs right up to the Grosse Point, one of the wealthier suburbs.

If the truth be known, how many of those fancy-pants homeowners are up to their eyebrows in mortgages & debt ?
