Took a trip up 71 through MN wed. night and was going around the detoure by Browerville about 11:30 pm and saw something I have never seen before. I was headed north and had a set of headlights approaching me and then as I got closer the far side cut out of vision and made me turn my head. Instead of a car it was an Amish (I assume) buggy. I got detoured around and back onto 71 and I came up behind 2 more. Not that they cant go out that late I was just shocked to see them out that late. Was glad to see they have the highly reflective tape and marker lights on there rigs. I had a good trip and return but I made lots better time at night as there is lots to see and many differant things for sale setting along the road. I guess you know you are up north when you have tractors, cars, trucks, boats and campers all setting on the same lot!

I am NW of Browerville about 20 miles. Get used to the buggies. Most have lights and reflectors but some do not and they still run at night. Cheap land and few regulations made this area attractive to Amish migration. Severe winters and short growing season have sent many back to their roots to the east and south.

I'm about 35-40 miles west of Browerville. That whole area in there has a pretty good Amish population to a biannual Amish auction to support their schools near Wadena. And yea, they been running some type of generators that drive off the wheels on their wagons for years now.

I sold a Moline rubber tired grain drill to a young Amish farmer in the Browerville area. Delivered it.....he wouldn"t use the neighbor"s loader tractor to unload it, but said I could drive it. IH 706 didn"t start anyway......so we pulled it off with his team. He could back them up a step at a time by clicking his tongue. Tempted to go back now- bet I"ll see steel wheels on the drill. My son lives in the Long Prairie area....common to see buggy tracks on the gravel roads.
