Finally got the tractor to the point where i installed the mower deck, however, when I engage the pto for the deck the motor knocks wildly and bogs down and finally stalls. I thought I had the carb adjusted correctly but now I'm second guessing myself. Any thoughts?

"87 Wheelhorse doing same thing earlier today. Found toasted bearing in pulley on PTO mule drive. Pulled the 16 Hp Kohler to it"s knees. Swapped in a spare pulley and all is good!

I'd guess that you have a pulley or spindle that isn't free if it runs good without the PTO engaged. If not there then you would be looking at a serious engine problem.

A guess on the MAYBE side. You can have a parcially sheared key. Had this kind of sounding problem just a few days ago. Mandrels, bearings and pony pulleys can all be headaches. I have one of those needle fittings for the grease gun. You can GENTLY slide the needle under the rubber seal and with green grease you can lube all of those "SEALED" bearings. Makes for a much longer and happy life.

Check the blade spindles and blades. Make sure they turn free and smooth, no bent blades or shafts.

Are the blades the right length? Not hitting each other or the deck?

Worked at golf course and the greens mower(14 HP Kohler) wanted to over rev and had no power. The governor shaft broke. They had another machine that blew the balance gear out the side of the block. I took the block to a specialty welding shop and they brazed a mild steel plate on to fix the hole. When the engine was put back together, they just left the balance gear off since the 12HP is basically the same engine but doesn't use a balance gear. The engine ran fine. I wish I would have taken some before and after pictures of the block. The hole was as big as a tennis ball. Lots of preheat and slow cooling. The engine would make an interesting conversation piece.

Well if it's fine while you're driving but acts up as soon as you engage the mower, I'd be looking at the mower rather than the engine.

Check the timing with a light after setting the points gap. You will find that tweaking them a little will get the timing right on. I had the same problem with an Allis Chalmers 416 with the 16 hp K341.
