Good Rake Tractor!

Best thing I ever did was put that 966 on the rakes; that ol' sow will cover some real estate in a hurry.

Weatherman says no wind today, so I raked 45 acres before the dew burned off. 50 acres to cut this afternoon and then it looks like I'll be baling all night.

It's funny that it takes a 966 to do what I do with an SC Case! That is pulling two NH rakes on a tandem hitch.

Before I ever bought a wheel rake seen a neighbor pulling his with a 2590 Case. Next time I seen him told him I was going to buy one, but guess I didn't have a big enough tractor around my place.

Yep baling all night! Came home last night about 10:30 from watching fireworks in town and there was a baler running in the highway ditch - pitch black out except for tractor lights.

Looks like a long walk back to the ranch if you ever have tractor trouble.

Allan in Ne;

How many acres do you farm? Own? Are you mainly a cattle operation? Just curious. Really like the landscape there. Still wish I could have seen it when the country was young. I just can't get my mind around a sea of grass that stretched to the horizon and then some.

my rake tractor is a little over kill as well but I sure like it on there, the A/c is nice as well, been three years at least since I had it off, these shots are from this morning

I used to rake with a SC also, but the older I get, the more I want to be comfy. Also depends on how many acres you are trying to get over.

That last photo, they will surely like that stuff, every time I took photos of hay, was never as green as it actually was, I"ve seen the hay shipped from out that way, always looks good. The farmer I used to help would always have me on the JD 3150 fwa for tedding and raking, a wee bit overkill, but it was good on fuel, I"ll bet he thought about a smaller tractor for some tasks, but he used what he had and they were all larger tractors, compared to what we used to hay, it was almost comical to hook a NH side delivery rake to it, he later scored a Kuhn rake at an auction, which replaced the NH. Years back he did have some smaller ones, one a roundnose genuine J I Case ! It was odd as he had a lot of JD, I always liked that one, would enjoy owning one just from the memories, was always towing double wagons from the fields with it down the road.

What kind of baler do you use?

I have a 688 and need about 30 to 32 feet of swath to keep 'er full. Don't see how that much hay can get under the tractor, but it does somehow.

To think I had to come back the opposite way to double up windrows, that rig would be handy, lol, just not sure it would go down the road or get in/out of the fields. the odd thing was we had a mounted pto side delivery rake, my friend had one of those ground driven units, used to bug me to have to rake my way out of the center I called him once and said "I'm done, but how do I get out???, he laughed like no tomorrow, always fun to work with him, his son always baled after me and liked how it was done, guess you never forget, had been 30 years since I raked a hay field then and when he wanted them doubled up for the round baler I always had to think about everytime, glance at the field so I did not screw it up, never did either, but for some reason I had to think briefly about it every time I did this, thick head I suppose lol !

I pull a double rake hitch with a SM.I use 2 left hand rakes.In LIGHT hay,I can put FOUR windrows together.
