Velvet Beans

Haven't seen any for 50 years. Dad planted them along with the corn and they would grow up on the corn stalks. He would pick whatever corn he needed for the year by hand and enough beans for seed for the next year then turn the cows and hogs loose in the fields. I remember they were big almost the size of marbles and the pods had three to four beans per pod. I have not seen or heard of them since then.

Thanks for the information.I have a bunch of old Cole Planter plates and several are labeled Velvet Bean so I've investigated a little and found a seed source I'm going to plant a few probably too late in the season for them to make but I'll get a good idea what they'll do here anyway.Looks like a good
deer plot plant or green manure plant anyway. The Cole planter has two seed compartments on each unit so I can plant them and corn at the same time. How did your dad plant the corn and beans together?

Yes that's how He did it with a cole planter corn in one side and beans in the other.
