1586 blower motor

Driving along and the blower motor quit, no smoke, no squeal just slowed down and stopped, like it was shut off. I have power at the switch, power at each speed terminal coming off the switch to motor and fan spins freely. Radio works, wiper works. I assume something went wrong with the motor, never had one just quit with no warning signs like, a burning smell, squeal, hot wires, or blown fuse. I loosended and tightened the ground wire to the blower cage and ran another ground wire to the motor cage, but not so much as a wiggle out of the motor. I will order a new one Monday, gonna be a hot two days in that thing without a fan. Anything else to check? Thanks for any help or information.

Sounds like you've covered all the bases. Wondering if there is a cooperative auto supply, they might match something up for you.

Where do you live??? There should be a CIH store within driving distance that should be open on Sat. Morning. An 86 series blower motor should be a stock item.

Also test your blower motor with direct power and grounds from the batteries with jumper wires. I have had grounding and power supply issues that would not show up with a test light or volt/ohm meter. I directly power the blower motors to rule out other issues 100%. I have replaced motors only to have to repair other issues after that.

I agree that it is odd that it failed without squealing first but I would say also that it is way overdue. I have noticed that those motors are a pretty standard thing between different makes, and that you can get them from various places for less than half what you would pay at a dealer.

Likely, the brushes were worn down to nothing. When a brush gets shorter than the distance between the brushholder and the commutator it flips out of place and the motor stops.

You used it up.

A local repair shop has motors with ball bearings for the 86 series. I tried one on the 1086 and it works fine but after it gets some wear it starts up some fine vibrations and small noises. If that doesn't bother you it's OK but noises like that bug me so I went back to the CIH dealer and got a motor with bushings. Try to treat the cages with TLC because they bend at the hub very easily and they will vibrate when you put it back together. I helped a neighbor put a new fan back in his 7060 Allis and it had the same setup as the 86 series only the squirrel cages were much stronger built. His was aftermarket from his AGCO dealer. I don't know if you can get stronger cages for the 86 series from the aftermarket or not. You are right about needing the AC. You can't open enough windows to keep the cab halfway livable when the fan quits. Jim
