I am not intending to be mean, and believe a solar blend is the correct answer moving forward, but we cannot believe it is free.

Jennifer408,
Be careful about complaining the electric Co is gouging you, or else you will have the jerks crawling out from under the rocks saying it's only "pocket change" and you should pay up cause they deserve it.lol. They have a right to set the rate and you have nothing to say about it.lol.
Make sure and include a thank you card in with your check to the electric Co. saying how much you appreciate them raising the rates and how much you enjoy adding the extra they asked for. Since you know they are hard working individuals and since there is a unsettled area over the pond that means the cost of oil went up so you believe it is your patriotic duty to pay up and shut up.Don't forget the tip.lol.

(quoted from post at 22:15:02 07/03/14) today, to not wright a check to the greedy utility company. :)
ou ain't seen nuthin yet!! Just wait until BO & his EPA bunch shutter all the coal fired generators!

Did you use a tractor to not write your check?

Why must we assume that companies are greedy? Profit is not a
dirty word. If I were running a utility company I would want a good
bit of profit since the uncertainty of the business with government
regulations etc add a good deal of risk.

I do not mind writing a check for utilities. BTW what is water
running in California?

I get the feeling the fire works will be starting a little early this year.

I'm pretty self sufficient but in the last couple years we've lost electricity for over 5 days days 3 times due to severe storms.Glad to be back on the grid.Machines that generate electricity are expensive to buy and operate.I suspect your electricity will
cost you more per KW hr over the long haul than being on the grid.My grandmother was about as tight with $$$ as anyone I have ever met and she said getting electric power was the great Godsend in her lifetime.

Yayyyyyyyyyy good for you. Once you recover all your solar investment and upkeep and maintenance are factored in you will feel even better I'm sure. If I were young and starting all over in a new home Id go Solar and Geothermal and Earth Sheltering and energy efficient super insulated home etc etc

If you can invest in equipment and supply your own energy needs and end up cheaper then the utility IM ALL FOR IT. Of course, the utility cant supply it for free, they also have equipment and employess and a ton of overhead and administrative costs etc etc. but I like the idea of going it alone especially if you end up with lowered energy costs.

CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes, keep us posted

Right now the cost of making your own electricity
is way more expensive than going with wind or
solar.

However, the cost of natural gas and electricity
will increase because coal will be phased out,
then solar and wind may be more attractive.

My only heart burn is the life expendency of golf
cart batteries.

I worked at a place that had 40 6 volt golf cart
batteries(trogans) for 90 minutes of back up
electricity to run emergency lighting. Batteires
lasted about 10 years. It cost a pant load to
replace them. The next set lasted another 10
years. Instead of replacing the batteries the
second time, they put flashlights in every room.

I'm with John T on this. If you can handle the up-front costs and the maintenance, not being beholden to other folks is a good way to be.

I have gotten old enough that I like the convenience, and trying to get away from a lot of maintenance. I have a smaller very well insulated home, and have geothermal heat, both of which I am very happy with. Just remember, that everything has limited life. Solar cells should last for extended periods if designed properly, but the covering over them will deteriorate with time and UV exposure reducing output. The inverters and regulators should last almost indefinitely if designed properly, but even so will fail occasionally. The big long term expense is batteries. Deep cycle batteries with enough capacity to handle higher loads over a long time are very expensive, and even if well maintained, such as ours at the phone company are, still are only dependable from 8 to 20 years, depending on the type.

Ameran in St.Louis today has just asked for a New rate increase of Ten percent above the current rates.
So no it is not getting any cheaper.

Anyone that can reduce their electric or gas or oil or wood should do so.

This country is energy independent but we still charge ourselves the same as the rest of the world because we are controlled by the gas companies and they are known as "WESAYSO".

glad you can do it, live between 2 hills, not enough
sunshine to be effective, other wise i would try it

The thank you card should be going to external_link and the EPA. They are solely responsible for energy costs going thru the roof.

The big rub is on the back of your meter, there is a switch that is adjustable,it says "fast --slow" or "F-- S" depending on the age.The power company can read the meter and speed indicator and they don't really have to read your rate, they just increase the speed of the meter from slow to fast, it all depends on their generosity, and where the switch is located.
The power company supplies the meter and they set the tempo.

Last year we received a rebate from our power company, the government got on their case because of overcharges. The check was pretty hefty, then the next few months, the electric co. decided to increase their rates. It's a no win situation. What one hand giveth, the other taketh away.lol. We do have a small generator to take care of power outage, but we are looking for a big one (whole house) it would be nice to find one that is steam operated,we could buy extra wood.lol.(here they come)

I realize you have solar power and all the trimmings, but do you have a electric service backup from the electric co? Just curious?

I was always tempted to send the power company my CD playing and titled "You Light up My Life".

Regards,
LOU

It is a great country where we have such a choice. As for me, I am thankful for the power company as I love the fact that when I flip the switch the lights come on, and I have zero maintenance to do for it. On those rare times when the power is out their crews are out there in the storm or the cold working to restore it.

Given that it only costs me $57 a month on average billing for a four bedroom, 3 bathroom home in town, I feel like I get great value for my money. But if you like it off-grid then I celebrate your right to do as you please.
