1030: the good, the bad, the ugly

Tried to break the engine loose this morning, but it was a no go. I didn't want to have a tractor that was rusted anyway, so I pulled it up to the shed and started to pull it down. The first pic shows what I found under the front valve cover. The second and third are of the intake pipe. 4th and 5th are looking in the front head ports, you can see the busted valve in the front exhaust port. The next pics are of the heads and cylinders as I took them off. Notice the hole in the first head. The busted valve did a lot of damage to that head and cylinder. The last are of the bearings. They are original and dated '68. They don't look too bad considering how poorly this tractor was taken care of. The oil was probly changed, but not often. the gunk is thick everywhere, check out the pic with the screw driver to gage the depth.

That's the way the engine in my 930 propane looked. Sat for a few years with the pre-cleaner top part way off. Filled the intake and engine with rain water. Took a while but I got it loose and overhauled it. Sweet tractor today. All it takes is time and money.

Wow, that's a mess; shame that it was treated that way. Are you going to fix it or part it?
Idea: load it back on your rig and take it up to Lyle, he'll have it rebuilt and painted by Wednesday.

Don't know if it's a fixer or not til I find out if the other 2 heads are good or not.

Nice rig, but how do you stand working without at least a hat or cap, much less an umbrella? I live in Texas so it is strange looking....same for horseback....just not right without a hat.
