My anniversary date at work is Sept 2nd, it will be 22 years. Today they announced the plant is closing on Sept 1st. Happy anniversary to me. Guess I will have more time to work on my tractors, might not be able to afford parts, but have the time to tear them apart!!

Tom, Good for you. Today was my first day of retirement, other than a dentist appointment it went fast. Dave F.

I Just had my 14th on June 30th. At 43 it will be a while before any thought about retiring here. Work at a gas furnace assembly plant in Indy. I wonder what will happen there before I can retire. Wish You well in what ever You get into! P.S. I actually don't plan on retiring... Period.

BTDT, 25 years and 1 day when we were let go, thought it would be rough getting a job @ 58, luck was with me as I was employed less than a month later. hope you are as lucky. leroy

Tom,

Congratulations on the possible retirement.

I retired for the second time about a week and a half ago. More time to fish, bend wrenches and see what there is to see in this world.

Of course I have been laid off twice in the past but those things happen.

Better to retire 2 years too early, than one day too late.

Tom JD50,
Sorry to hear about the timing of the closure. I've been let go a couple of times, first at 48 then at 55. Those were dark days for me with the uncertainty of where I could find a job. Took a while both times but I managed to get back into the workforce and I'm still employed at 64 and hope to make 3 more years.

Funny thing about it is that my grandparents generation went through the depression and survived but I know many of them had an outlook about money that our parents and us couldn't quite understand. Now, having been unemployed several times with bills to pay and no guarantees about income, I can understand it. Good luck on finding a new job.

I got the best job of my life when I was 62. It takes optimism and a positive outlook.

I think too many older people have a defeatist attitude and think, "I'll never get another job at my age", so they don't.

Its been said, that when one door closes another will open up.
Several years ago I wanted to get off the road, then the company decided to git rid of their trucks and I had the chance to finish my time in the plant.
I went thru their maintenance program and sharpened up my mechanical skills, then since I have retired it has helped me in my hobby.

I retired from normal job at 60, then a job two farms went together for the last four years, and that didn't work out at age 69, and know at age of 70 I work for a friend when ever I want, but he said no more than 70 hours a week. Ha Ha. LOVE IT. Tractor Times is Tractor Time.
