MM R confused

Back to basics I guess. I pull all the plugs from the cyclinders. Turn the motor over till I have compression on number 1 cyclindr. Should I not now have spark at or near the same time? I continue the process feeling for compression and looking to see if I have spark at the plug. If this is correct the first wire coming out of the cap was not where I was told it should be. I change all the wires to the plugs and now it backfires through the air intake of the carb. Am I on the right track as far as finding the starting point for number one cyclinder and plug wire cap sequence? Thanks.

Turn the engine with your finger over the #1 plug hole until you start to feel compression, then continue to turn the engine to just before top dead center.

Then look at the rotor, see which terminal it points to. That will be #1 plug wire.

Then, turn the dist/mag housing opposite the rotor rotation until that wire fires. May have to do this several times to get it right. It should be close enough to start.

After finding the compression stoke with my thumb, I stick a pencil in the spark plug hole and turn it over by hand so I can tell when I get to TDC. Haven't lost a pencil yet!

The number 1 plug wire is not necessarily the one labeled on the mag cap. Whichever one fires when you're at TDC will be it. Then just get the rest of the firing order correct from there and you should be good to go.
