OT Some varmint trashed our Mantis Garden Tiller

Why Worry

Member
Hello all,

My wife and I have a large garden and we use the small Mantis tiller for regular weeding. We'd been keeping it in the lilac bushes next to the garden but something got a hold of it and shredded all the exposed wire and cables and ripped of the air filter cover and trash the foam air filter.

Any idea of what could have done this?

Other than the possibility of it simply being vandalized, a lot of critters seem to be attracted to the chemicals in plastic. I'm sure you have heard of mice getting under the hood of a car and chewing wires. I had a cat chew the wires off a dishwasher that I left sitting on the porch, and a few years ago, I sold one customer about half dozen license tag lights for his new trucks step bumper because his puppies kept chewing the wires off them.

well, I made the mistake of parking my garden tractor in with the goats one day - came back a few hours later to find they had eaten all the electrical wires off of it...

... maybe you've got wild goats. :)

Rabbits really like plastic wire insulation- son had a tame rabbit he used to let loose in the house (it was potty trained to go back to his cage if nature called). Very cute- he'd play with the dog, jump into your lap, etc., but DON'T let him get under the computer table- he could wreck all the wiring in seconds. We had to post a guard.

I was sawing lumber for a guy and he had deer asnd elk in the pen where we were at. We were using his skid steer to load the logs on the mill. Lunch time came and he left his skid steer in the pen. When we came back there was a 6X6 bull elk ripping the wires out of the over head consol. Quite a sight to see him with his head in the cab

Mike,
That reminds me of a puppy I had.
I caught him chewing on an extension cord one day and thought oh no, better unplug all the electrical cords so he doesn't get hurt.
So he proceeded to chew the cords off of my circular saw and Sawzall.
Grrr.
From then on I always left all cords, tools, etc plugged in - and never lost another cord.

Woodchucks are notorious for going after electrical wiring, although it could have been done by just about any rodent.

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard critters are attracted to recycled plastic because of food odor.

Maybe I am missing something here but why would you leave/store your tiller outside an then be surprised when something goes wrong on it???

The small two cycle engines I have are hard enough to keep running with them being under cover whenever they are not in use.

I have a Mantis my wife bought over 30 years ago and has never been out in the weather. It's too heavy for her to carry. It's kept in the mini barn. I bought a lot of Troy Bilt tillers that wouldn't start that were left in the garden. Hal
