Sacrificial cutting

I got the NI 290 out for a test cut Saturday and dropped just a couple acres with it. Honestly the best I've seen it cut in a long time, and it cuts nice.

It rained a little bit every night but not enough to really soak it until this afternoon. Kinda figured it'd get rained on, but took a chance anyway. I laid it out just narrow enough that the tractor didn't run any over on the edges of the windrow, and plan on raking it in another day or 2, and if I have to one more time before trying the baler.

Meanwhile I'm hoping for the shafts to get done to put our Gehl 920 wagon together again so we have 2 wagons to chop with. Probably a full day of reassembly once they're ready....

Just for kicks- can anybody ID the tractor?

Well, you don't show much, but from the front tire, the muffler placement and the cat 2 3pt hitch arm I would call this a MF 285. Joe

Brings back memories seeing one of these, we had 2 535's the blue variety, always left a pile on top behind the reel, and I always wondered what the bar was for in the front. I remember it cut well in thick alfalfa too, had 532 ford balers too. Recently saw a working 290 for sale, looked in about the same condition on the outside. I remember thinking back about it when I ran a new JD disc mower in '09, the hydro swing and the up and down, no more looping around, I did a bunch of 2nd cut with it, was amazed at how things have changed. This farmer ran a NH mower conditioner for years prior to, I remember one year our tractor and 535 got stuck he came over to pull it out, and finish the field with his NH and the 535 performed better, was funny, as he knew how to keep this equipment in top shape, something was off, we joked about it. Good ole days of nothing but farming, not like that anymore.

Joe got it. It's a 78 285. We've got a 14' hydro swing as well, but it takes a lot longer for the hay to dry down with it so sometimes the New Idea comes out. I just put all new guards on it as well as hold downs and wear plates. We use it every year in the swamp grass, and with the few other pieces I picked up for horse hay.

It's easier to road this one 13 miles behind a pickup if need be too.

We had a 535 for a good many years until it tore apart between the head and the gear box area. Dad bought this one from out in front of the junk yard the next year.

Been a tough year for making hay here too...glad I don"t have to anymore. Neighbor with 4wd JD chopper with duals got stuck chopping haylage. Still has some to cut- can"t get close to it. My son just cut his first alfalfa last nite.
