Crop Conditions

I just made trip from Eastern Iowa to Chicago and back. The crops in Northern Illinois look a lot wetter and further behind than ours.

Tonight we went for a little drive to check out some hogs. The corn was from make out the rows to over 7ft not tassled.

There is corn still going in the ground here in northern indiana! Some beans left too. Granted not very much but one farmer nearby farms a thousand acres and still has around 80 in corn to go

I may have spoken to soon, we are getting hammered tonight with rain, 2" down and another 2" heading in.

I would have been invisible in one field of corn a few days ago - I can't swim. Think there was 5.5 to 6 feet of water on it.

Corn is behind around here, some looks nice, some is drowned out for the second time. Knee high would be a generous average. Much more than average is small, yellow, and obviously stunted from the moisture and lack of root growth.

We might be in for a somewhat nicer week, that might help.

We have been blessed here in North-East Iowa with pretty darn good crops. I have good stands with excellent weed control. My earliest corn is already rolling the tassel up in the top. In 5-10 days it will shot out. The beans are just getting down to the fertilizer and taking off. I have the second trip to do on spraying but if it stays wet I am still OK with the control as it is.

I feel for the guys that are way behind due to the wet spring weather. We have been able to get short windows for planting and hay making.

How well they/you are prepared is really showing this year. The windows of time for field work have been real short. Any kind of break down or delay was real critical this year.

Will post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to down load them into the wife's computer. I have still not bought another computer.

Here in my part of NWIA pothole country not only do we have drown out but the crops in the wetter poorly drained soil are not looking so good. The corn in those places is short and pale and the beans are losing bottom leaves. In the higher places the crops look good. 15 miles south of me they missed some of the heavy rain and their crops looked very good yesterday. Last night those parts south of me caught an awful lot of rain and some hail so their situation might be changed. My good corn is shoulder high which is about normal for these parts. The wet, sickly looking corn is almost knee high. Last Friday I got about 180 acres of the weediest beans sprayed so that pressure is off of me for now. I was kind of sitting straight up in the seat when I drove into some of the wet spots but I made it through them without throwing much mud. We've had another 1.8" of rain in the past day but it looks like it's pretty much over for now. We need lots of SUN AND DRY WEATHER!

Agree crops are just about unbelievably good in central Ill. Shows what can result if you receive timely, non-flooding precipitation; similar to what the boys with irrigation typically expect. Beans are particluarly great; didn't matter if they are drilled or planted in 15 inch or 30 inch rows.
