I planted fall wheat following red clover. Last year I took a crop of red clover hay, then combined the seed from the second growth. I scratched the field with a disc and planted the wheat. I am pleased with the results. I am not worried about the clover in the straw. I do swath all my grain crops and I have a scour clean on my 300 Massey. Thought you might be interested.

Chas, How many acres do you have? 20 / 30! Unless you are counting on a grain check. I would set the crimpers tight on the swather, get it laid down ASAP... No Later than "Doughy-milk" stage, 3 to 4 days later start Round Baling, or even 200 or so sm sq bales for cattle or horses up in the pens at the barn! That will make great hay! Get-R-Done!
Hope this helps!

Interesting, and it looks like a nice field. While it would make nice hay, I would be careful feeding it to horses though, have been told by our vet that high content red clover hay can be a problem if a horse has been eating it and happens to get a cut, they could bleed out. He said Red Clover is anti-coalulant.

chas , you are in Ontario , rite ?...and it seems you are swathin everything just past wheat milk stage ,runnin everything thru 300 massey via pik up,,threshin the wheat into the bin ,, and scour cleanin for clover seed , capturing that all in a sack ,, am I correct ??? . dad used to run a case f , and also a jd 30 pulltype , both of them had scour cleaners ,, he would sack the weed seed and toss it in the hogpen ,, occasionally he would capture a good clover field just rite and glean the clover seed too,, I recall we had one end of field that had turnip green s gone to seed while combining beans ,,. he rebroadcast that in the same end of the field ,, and we cut greens ,, pikup load racks above the cab ,, load after load ,,, sold them all on the Louisville hay market ,, made some good cash off that end of the field . we rarely see anyone swath here in ind . , but it sure makes sense for you folx up north ,, btw ,,I have one diesel 300 and 2 gasser 300 masseys
