6 Cylinder Continental

I have a 6 cylinder continental engine in my air
compressor. It's ran good and still does for the
past 5 years. But just this weekend it decided to
start boiling the engine coolant out the radiator
cap. I replaced the thermostat with a new one and
it still boils over. Fan belt is tight too! Any
ideas?
I'll probably be getting rid of it if any one may be interested in it. Runs good and pumps air good 125 CFM Jaeger 3 cylinder 2 stage compressor.

With the engine up to running temp, is the air coming through the radiator warm?

If so, the coolant is circulating. If it's cold, there is no circulation. No circulation can be caused by plugged radiator core, bad thermostat,(new ones can be bad!), or the pump impeller has come off/erroded away.

You can also feel the front of the radiator, it should be uniform temp feeling side to side, warmer at top, cooler toward the bottom, but there should be no cold spots.

If there are cold spots, the radiator core is plugging up.

Not sure if your gauge works, but do you suspect it is overheating? If it's boiling over and not overheating, chances are it's a head gasket leaking. That is a relatively easy fix since it's a flathaed. Just use rust penetrant!

One other, a longshot but... Is this a pressure system? Is the cap good?

The gauge in't hooked up.
It's not a pressurized system.
I stuck a heat plug that salvage yards put on their engines to show if an engine has been over heated and it doesn't show sign of over heating. I will pull the bottom hose off and run water thru the radiator to see how the flow is. Cores may be plugged.

Take the belt off the water pump and run it BRIEFLY. Watch for air bubbles in the rad. Easy way to spot a blown head gasket or crack. The old flat heads will leak at the gasket. Not a big deal. Take off the head have it surfaced put on new gasket. The 4 and 6 cyl conts are good engines!

It's been a good compressor for me the last five years. I know if something happens to the compressor itself I won't be able to find parts for it. I bought this engine from a Welder Dealership for $125. I had to put the manifold, bellhousing & distributor on it from the old engine. I have a man coming tomorrow to take a look at it and maybe take it off my hands. Hate to see it go but there's newer ones out there.
