I have an old JD 70 that I use a lot for raking hay but I am in a bind because the clutch isn't working, it stays engaged all the time. I start it and stop it with the foot brakes. I start it with the brakes applied, in gear and the clutch disengaged. It starts moving as the starter is engaging, I hope someone can tell me what the problem might be. It also seems to leak oil between the drum and the engine body.

More than 1 thing wrong. That said, start with making sure the pulley brake is adjusted properly. It is integral with the clutch linkage. HTH

Take off the pulley cover and look...I think a clutch dog may be broken and jammed up.Had a 730 that did that once.Or a disk has come apart/disentgrated and wedged in there. Those clutches are REAL EASY to work on...

"a disk has come apart/disentgrated and wedged in there"

That"s definitely the MOST likely scenario.

Open up the operators manual and perform a total clutch inspection and service as described and illustrated. Before you have a wreck.

Check the bolts that adjust the clutch, they will wear a grove in and catch on that grove, at least that was the way the AR did.

Have you been leaving it in running gear with the clutch disengaged?
