Allis Chalmers CA

Make sure the hand clutch functions. Parts for it are pricey. It's cheap enough to replace the axle with one from a C, though, if you don't care about having a hand clutch.

They are great little tractors

Check if someone bolted or welded the hand clutch, rather than fix it. Might run about $600 to rebuild the clutch, if you can find parts.

Make sure it doesn't pop out of gear. Try each gear at full throttle then chop back to idle. Down hill is best if possible. They had a tendency to wear the gears if guy tried up shifting on the go or ground the gears.

While this advice applies to all tractors....
Check for antifreeze in the oil. Don't trust the dipstick, crack the drainplug.
While probably just bad luck, the last 3 AC's I've bought had antifreeze in the oil. (headgasket, sleeve o-ring, cracked head & freeze plugs in head, respectively)
