Hose clamps, gear type vs squeeze

Factory clamps tend to be squeeze type and a little wider than the typical gear type. Is it best to reuse the factory, or replace . Seems to me that I probably tend to over tighten the gear type.

That's really based on personal preference and application.

Some of the newer automotive cooling system clamps are really strong and work well. I will usually reuse them.

Also depends on the condition of the hose and the fitting. If reusing old, hard hose, on a rusty fitting, I would use a worm clamp so I can get it tighter.

Hydraulic return lines are too stiff for spring clamps, need the extra force of a gear clamp.

Good thing about a quality spring clamp is they take up the slack as the hose deteriorates. Worm clamps will not, and vibration can loosen them.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both...

Factory clamps are always under tension and do a better job keeping things sealed.
They are however a PITA to remove and reinstall without the proper tool.
I usually replace them with gear clamps in places that are hard to get to whenever i have to take one off.
Just use common sense in tightening these gear clamps.
There's no need to torque the **** out of them to get them to seal.

Avoid worm type clamps from Harbor Freight - they strip out real easy. I buy quality stainless steel clamps from the plumbiong department at Lowes that I can tighten real tight.

I prefer the constant tension clamps. The newer ones lock open and if you squeeze again they lock closed. They usually don't leak and I haven't seen one loosen yet. Worm clamps loosen.
