$112... the price of new points and condenser for the WICO magneto on our B John Deere.

Husband warned me they'd be spendy... but he didn't think they be quite THAT spendy.

Where did you buy them? I normally go to NAPA for the points and condenser, or Roberts Carb repair for rotors, caps etc.
Deere has gotten way out of line on most of that stuff for vintage equipment, and then a good percentage of those China built condensers are either bad out of the box, or don't last long.

James gets them at the auto parts store. Condensers are about $8.00 each.

They are much, much more expensive at the JD dealership.

That's seemingly high, I get them from Napa too, Echlin, Ford 172 4 cylinder. It had to be significantly less, under $50 I thought, cap rotor, points, condenser. I've had good luck with them or that brand for ignition parts. I think I've experienced the lower quality problem, one rotor self destructed inside the cap, I went back and got the old/spares I did not throw out when I did a tune up, think that rotor is still on there, and the last set of points I got I can't recall, been a few years, the tractor does about the same annual work, it gets used. I had been having trouble with the contacts on the previous set, if the tractor sat (under cover too) for any length of time, so I replaced with Napa-Echlin.

We went to NAPA first... guy with an ear "plug" (in his ear lobe, I mean) plopped a couple boxes on the counter... husband looked at parts and said, "These are not the correct parts".

Maybe he knows a bunch about cars but not old tractors...he looked in the books for about 15 minutes but could only find the correct points, not the condenser. So husband just thanked him for his help.

In the pickup he said, "We'll make a run to JD - they'll be spendier, but they'll have them or be able to order them."

Billy,

Yeah, we will have to price shop next time... I think the B just acted up a bit last week - and he decided to get them one way or another this week since we are off work.

Sweetfeet, next time go to www.robertscarbrepair.com
Model C magneto.....point set..17.97
condenser...14.67
Model X Magneto .....point set w/felt wiper 16.76
condenser 11.02
Or you can call them at 712-262-5311, if so talk to Laurie, and tell her Dale West recommended them. She is a very nice person to deal with.

Old Popper,

Good idea. He mentioned checking with Robert's next time.

And yeah, apparently Deere has gotten A LOT more expensive! Have not bought anything there for a lot of years... and it will be a long time before we do so again. LOL.

Thanks, Old Popper... will save that info.

Ours is Model X...
and wow, that really makes JD seem insane!!

WGWKy2Sheesh.... I didn't even think of YT (duh on me)... we are usually looking for Farmall Regular parts -- and they don't have any of those.

I'm getting old and my brain is getting soft. :)

Was just one of those "get 'er done today things"... in case we can mow in a day or two.

Sweetfeet, I spend most of my time on the 9-N board, one of the guys (with help) put together a cross reference list of NAPA parts. It gets added on to from time to time. Might be something similar on JD or IH boards. Or time to start a list. joe

Points for any vehicle are getting very difficult to find a quality set at any price. I returned a set to John Deere for a delco distributor because the arm of points contacted the lobe in dist before the wear bar. He got out another set with Deere part number, not the aftermarket one he originally sold customer. They were just as bad. Talked to the mechanics that I used to work with in the shop and they just kind of laughed, yup. Went to NAPA and he had a set but I didn't like the way they were made. Went to Agco dealer and he had a nice set so used them.
Couple weeks ago, was tuning up a Super C Farmall, had ordered the parts from CaseIH. Come to install the points and they were so far out of alignment the two points didn't even meet. Luckily I had an older set of new points in my truck and they were fine. I always align points but those were impossible. Sent that set back and marked box junk. Haven't heard anything back on them. Only about 8 bucks though.

Yeah, time was, when demand dropped for an item, they price went down. Nowadays, with inventory taxes, etc. the price increases. My 1986 F-150 has an ignition module that I used to sell original Motorcraft every day for about $50.00. They redesigned the ignition and now there is less demand for the units and I just priced one at O'Reilly's for $169.99! Full retail at a dealership would likely be more than that!

These days I have learned to shop on line. I would like to be able to buy locally, to get good quality items, the correct items, with a short drive to town. You can't do it anymore. Anything more than a few years old isn't in stock- even at the dealerships. They have to order it and I have to either wait a week or more of pay their crazy steep shipping price. It seems it's that way everywhere now. So I shop on line for a lot of stuff. Often I get free shipping. If I'm getting a TISCO part from town and it's $40.00 plus the wait of a week or more or pay for shipping and I can get it on line in 2-3 days for $20.00 and free shipping...what would you do?

As much as I want to support our local economy, it's just gotten to the point where it makes no sense to take a beating doing it.
