freezer temp? OT.

I took my mother-in-laws freezer when they cleaned her house out. It is an upright. After filling it and running it for a month with thermometer it is 10 below zero. I always keep my chest type at 15 above. I left it set as she had it. Is there a reason she would have had an upright that cold or should I have my chest type colder? What do you guys have yours at?

An older gentleman I know of always said forget the thermometer, use ice cream. At 0 ice cream would be "spoonable" or something to that effect. At say -15 it would be hard as a brick. At say +10 it would be soft almost runny. Through the years I've come agree with this.

Mine is -10. Freezes food faster which helps with quality. Another thing you have to remember is an upright loses a ton of cold air from the bottom every time the door is opened. Chest types don't have that issue.

You are correct in that an upright freezer looses cold that a chest freezer does not. The thing is it is cold air that is escaping and once the door is shut the air inside will be back to cold in just a moment or two. So for me the convenience of an upright (in and out very fast compared to a chest freezer unless the item you want is on top) far outweighs the loss of a bit of cool air when I open the door.
