Crabgrass...

Crabgrass is starting to show up... what is a good effective product to kill it but not the lawn??? Last year tried all the crabgrass killers and had no luck at even twice the rate on the label.

What type of grass are we trying to save? I have used two applications of Prowl at 1.5 qt per acre on zoysia. Depending on the rains itll hold it off for a long while.

Some folks have also successfully used a very low rate of glyphosate to kill crabgrass in Bermuda grass.

Are you absolutely sure it is crabgrass? Acclaim is a real good post-emergent control for crab. I am assuming you used something like Dimension this past spring.

You don't say what kind of grass you are wanting to keep, that makes a difference. I use a product called Pastora in my bermuda grass hay fields. Mixed with 2-4,D it will kill just about everything but bermuda grass but it is very expensive and as far as I know is not available in small acreage amounts. If you know a local farmer you might buy enough mix to do your lawn.

The seed was Kentucky blue grass, fescue and ryegrass. That's what was on the seed label. Products made for crab grass by Ortho brown the leaves a little and 2-4D at 3oz. per gallon of water does nothing. Roundup will kill it of course, but will kill the lawn also. May try Trimec 899 to see if it works.

I like crab grass. Would have giant bare places in yard without it.

Maybe try this but I bet it aint cheap.Trimec Clssic is $43.00 a gallon this season.

Nothing really kills crabgrass except roundup it spreads by seeds and the winter kills it. Use a good pre emergeant in fall and twice in spring your best hope is next year an prevention. Although I have had a little luck by stepping on it with my foot so it doesnt beed the product then spraying but it only seems to thin not totally kill. Note this advice is for a lawn not for farming.

Years past the fertilizer plant guy said to mix Prowl into lime early in the spring and sprad it with a yard fertilizer spreader.

MSMA will kill crabgrass and other annual grasses in cool season turf, follow the label
