starter housing

My Dad and I have an Allis Chamler WD45 that the starter housing broke on. I ordered a replacement but the replacement didn't work, the new one after incerting in the tractor was 1/4 inch to long at the bottom and 1/2 inch to long at the top and made a really mean sound when I tried to start the tractor up. Now to be honest I don't know a lot about tractors, my 80 year old Dad is teaching his oldest daughter so enough said (yes I am to tom boy). Has anyone had this problem before and can anyone point me in the right direction. It is a gas tractor and was converted from 6v to 12v. I really need help with this one, our tractor is down. I live in the boonies of VA, there are no tractor repair places even near me that I know of.

Pat , they show that starter nose right here on the YT store, in the upper left corner of the page . The Nose is $70 , and a whole reman starter is $220.....

It is entirely possible that you were sent the wrong part.

Have you called back the place you bought it from and explained the problem to them?

Do you still have the old starter? Count the number of teeth on the old starter gear, and compare to the new. I suspect your new starter doesn't have enough teeth on the gear.

This site lists two different starters for the WD45, so it is entirely possible that you ordered the wrong one.

Also there is no need to post the same question to multiple boards. Just the one board that best fits the question (i.e. the Allis board).
