I'm an idiot. 8N related

So I had to replace the starter on my newly acquired 8N (keep in mind I'm new to this and this is my first tractor). I go ahead and replace the solenoid since it's off. Like an idiot I didn't think about making sure the solenoid was a 12V and sure enough it was a 6V and it's fried. My question are the starters voltage specific or should I be ok after replacing the solenoid with the correct one?

Welcome to the club, we're all idiots. I would think a 12 volt solenoid should fix you up just fine.

The 6V starter works fine, so does the 6V solenoid.
They do need to be hooked up right though.
If original, it mounts on the starter with the small terminal toward
the engine. It will not work with the small terminal pointed out.
If not mounted on the starter, you have the wrong one.
Some of them can be made to work too, but not all 3 post solenoids
are wired the same internally so would need to know what you have.

Try tapping off of 480 to feed a 120 panel. Saw that done one time. Everything on 120 went poof. When the power was turned on.

Your starter should be fine.

Your 6V starter will operate from a 12V battery but the shock loading imposed on the starter drive and ring gear will be increased enormously resulting in premature wear and failure of both.

Additionally, you should avoid extended cranking periods to avoid overheating the field coils.

(quoted from post at 04:00:31 06/17/14) Don't tell mine - it uses a 6 volt starter and solenoid every time it starts with its 12 volt battery.

Same here, no issues when I have to use a 12V battery to start the old girl.
