Cletrac HG, Year??

Hi all. I have this little Cletrac HG 42, it was my neighbors (the one that passed away)

We have been doing a bunch of firewood logging, and I thought that this little cat would be GREAT for skidding trees!

It has a 4cyl Hercules, flat head in it. It is free, and it really doesn't seem like it would take that much to get it running.

I have been looking around online, and I discovered that there are three different engines, depending on the year, and I was wondering if there was a way to figure out the year of the cat?

I read somewhere ( Tractor Data I think )that for a little while, like the early years, there was a number engraved on the bell housing, but I haven't found one.

It said that the late ones had a plate on one of the frame rails, however this one had a home made loader on it, and at one point he picked up to much and snapped the entire machine in half... It has been fixed, but there is no plate!!

Anyway, I would really like to see the ole girl run again, and am just trying to get started on it! Bryce

I had an HG when I was about your age. It was my second tractor. I pulled a 2-12" plow with it. I cut and raked hay with it. I built a dozer blade for it and a buck rake. It was my ATV before ATVs. Jump on, push the button and go. I wish I had never sold it to buy my first D2.

The 3 engines are the IXA (early ones)IXK the most common and the late ones used the IXB. On the left side of the block near the top is a flat spot that has the serial number and the model of the engine stamped into the block. Look it up.

Okay, I will look it up tomorrow, where do I go to find a year?

A friend of mine says that he has a good working/running 4cyl Hercules out of a 310-C Case, he has offered to give it to me, would it fit in the Cletrac? They appear to be basically the same engine, I went on to Tractor Data, and it is basically a Over Head valve engine, that is just a little bit bigger in horse, but not much! Bryce

The Hercules engine has a standard SAE mount on the rear of the engine so there are several other makes of engines that will bolt up to the rear clutch-housing. Late HGs and OC3s are bascially identical crawlers and Oliver made a few OC3s with four-cylinder Continental diesel engines. Swapping engines would still take a lot of fooling with the hydraulic pump drive, engine mounts, radiator, etc. I've seen HGs with Chevy Chevette engines, Wisconsin engines, Continental engines, etc. My choice would be keep the Hercules.
Dating HGs is usually difficult because they were like the Model T Fords of the small crawler world. Parts got swapped a lot. Early HGs have front idler wheels that have a raised rib in the middle. Later HGs and OC3s have the better front idler with a recess in the middle and raised walls on the sides. Also very late HGs have slightly different final drives.
An engine put of a Case 310 would be a 148 gas or a 188 diesel I assume.
