Sounds to me like he pulled the choke out! Didn't you do it when you were younger with standard shift? Going down the road shut it off in gear, pull choke to load it up, turn on key, BANG, if you weren't careful your cheap muffler was sheetmedal. Try it with your old tractor if you want.

had thought about doing that, but with a vertical exhaust 2 feet from my face I decided against the idea.
