Pump Shaft Repair

Need some advice. I'm putting a FEL on my Ford 640. It's a wagner I bought but I had to get a new pump. I mounted the pump and thought I had it lined up but it was in a bind and it broke the coupling and chipped the shaft where the moon key cut out is. One of those deals where trying to save money and make my own bracket deals. Well I bought the right mounting bracket but the moon key won't hold. Can I tack weld the coupling to the end of the shaft or should I fill in the chipped area and reform it. I thought about drilling a hole for a roll pin but the shaft is to hard for anything I tried. Please give me your opinion. Thanks.

Junk the shaft it's most likely bent by now these kind of things that are hardened and then damaged are beyond any repair that will work without causing other damage to the pump.
Live an learn I guess

Use a file to scratch the shaft. If it is hard the file will not cut into it. If it is not hard, you might be able to weld the key in place, on the side that is chipped out. First put the key in place, then slide the coupler over it to be sure the key is seated properly. Remove the coupler and then fill the chipped out area with weld.

Just enough welding to fill the void.

Those pump shafts are heat treated hard. Welding on them can make them break. Clean the shaft and coupling up an then install a new woodruff key in the remains of the keyway. Then install the coupling with Loctite retaining compound. Let it cure 24 hours and you will be good to go for years. I have repaired several this way.

If you ever need to remove the coupling just heat it up and the Loctite will release.
