Adjusting Marvel Carb using exhaust temp gauge.

Too lean yes. Removing an air filter can lean it out enough to do this if run hard .Adding less restricted exhaust. Wrong plugs [a different condition will also hole the pistons quickly]. When tuning you always sart on the fat side and work toward ideal tune. Even trying to tune on the lean too much can melt your piston. Running low out of fuel and wicking the throttle can raise temps quickly as the fuel mix becomes a flame.

(quoted from post at 04:44:05 06/12/14) I posted same question on YT Ford.

My main concern is can you get things too hot to
burn a hole in piston? I've seen melted pistons with
a hole in them.

No - you should not need to worry about damage on a stock engine. Holed pistons, melted ring lands, etc. are typically due to abnormal ignition/combustion (knocking pinging). I set the mixture on my 8N lean and then increase until it takes throttle without a stubble. I like to see the choke required for starting/warm up, no choke indicates to me it is richer than needed.

Abnormal adjustment range on the mixture adjustment screws can indicate faulty/plugged air bleed circuits in the carb. Those circuits are very important.

Note: Exhaust gas temperature follows charge temperature; on a cold day it drops and a hot day it increases even if the mixture is held constant. It is easy to get fooled with exhaust temps.

Well my exhaust temps peaked at 2 full turns out.
I went another 1/8 and they fell below where I
started at 2 1/2 turns. I have plenty of power
about 2 minute warm up period. I think I may leave
it there and see if I have any dieseling on a 95
degree day. I keep the tack at 1800 too.

I even pushed it today, 3 gear, mowing with a 6 ft
rear woods RM660.

Good to know I won't drill a hole in piston
playing around.

Now I need to figure out a way to determine my
fuel consumption. I'm sure leaning it out will
help at nearly $4/gal.
