Cub Cadet 127 is tired

The old Kohler in my Cub 127 is burning oil pretty bad and
seems low on horse. What all can be done to these old cast
iron Kohlers to freshen them up? Are all the needed parts
still available and from where? Thanks

Kohler parts may be best, but they are expensive with a capital E! I rebuilt my K341 with Stens aftermarket parts, I was skeptical but they seemed like decent quality and it runs good. I had about $250 in it parts, machining, and all. They are easy engines to rebuild.

Super Trucker and Sprint6 have this one about right. kohler parts are expensive, but top quality. Almost all of the small engine mechanics I know regard Stens as the best of the aftermarket parts. In the 20+ years i did small engine work, I can't recall ever being disappointed with Stens parts.

Pay attention to the direction the rod is facing. They have to be bolted onto the crank facing a certain direction. Bolt it on in the opposite direction and the motor won't even turn over.

On ebay you can get a stens or rotary brand complete overhaul set for around $140.00. I have used several of these with good results. Dave

What all do they need to have done? I know they should be bored out but what about grinding the valves, anything to the crank, milling the head? What all has to be done to do it right? Thanks for the advise!

I've rebuilt 5 Kohler engines using the rebuild kits I bought off of Ebay. They are a mix of Stens hardware and Kohler gaskets. The oldest one has close to 9 years on its overhaul (Cub 1450) and has had a lot of hours - still runs like new.

A 127 should have the steel governor gears so I wouldn't worry about them - if it were newer and had the plastic gears I'd replace them as part of the rebuild.

The K301 kits are cheap - especially compared to the pricing of an all Kohler kit (same parts different boxes?).

With $40-$60 worth of machine shop work you can have a brand new 40 year old engine for less than $160. The key to making an old K series last is keep enough oil in it and keeping it somewhat clean.

I would replace the connecting rod and make sure the crank is round and clean. That engine had a habit of throwing rods.

NAPA, has an "Outdoor Power Equipment Service
Parts" catalog, which has a large assortment of genuine Kohler parts, and generic NAPA parts. YES,
"Not Cheap" but high quality!
