Well, here is what I found in the "Car and Truck" section of CL today, looks like it could solve a few Bad Neighbor problems!!! :)

Have been going on CL looking for a good first truck for me for the past few days, haven't found anything good... Would really like a late 70's early 80's Chevy, 4x4, 3/4 ton, 350 with a 4 speed in it, but they just aren't out there!!!

What was your first car? Bryce

We had six 67 Chevy trucks with the 350 3 out of the six had no oil pressure at idle and went though camshaft about 15'000 mi. Had lots of trouble with those early 350s

there out there, but you wont find many on c/l, your going to have to get into truckpaper, or classic truck trader to find them expect a good one to cost more now than they did new, these were always popular models probably 2nd only to the '67 - 72 body style, the cost and the problems of the complicated new stuff has driven the value of these old simple work trucks up a bunch, the window sticker on my '80 k-30 was bumping ten grand new, and i wouldnt take that for it now, its not worth that on the open market but its worth more than that to me,all of mine are duallys, with comercial trades bodies on them , also my' 80 still has its factory paint,my '83 c-30 and my '70 f-350, all still in their first life, all are 'presentable' in their working clothes, as long as you stand 20 feet or so from the trucks lol

You've got good taste in trucks, now I won't entertain ford vs chevy, or any of that, for any reason, my neighbor is the same way, he's had them all, in all the brands in his long life, we just had that discussion and agree, who cares about any of it, good and bad in all things mechanical and life itself LOL !

I like k series chevy, gmc, still have an old rusty one with a what was in '91 a new well completely rebuilt 350, early one, 4 bolt main. It was originally an automatic, and I did convert it, funny thing was, I had no experience doing anything of the sort, I just had motivation, it was a challenge and in a few weekends, working on it in a yard we had at work, it was done. Best thing about it was a great napa store just over the fence and another parts place that sold spicer, turned flywheels, just good places I could just about walk to. Trans and complete drive train came out of a mid 70's rotted out K10, 30,000 miles, used on a farm only and rusted out quickly. Friend at work gave me everything I needed, I figured out the rest, even got a few things from a GM dealer, little odds and ends. Odd arrangement, 270 ratio in the differentials, and a 4 spd with the low hole, when I took it down the highway, speedo was off by a lot and you probably want lower gears, but I was proud of my work, I did it. Neatly punched hole through the firewall, installed the trans/NP 203 or 205 I forget, gear drive transfer case all on the cross member, with a floor jack. CLutch assembly, I never did a clutch job before, flywheel surfaced at the shop and the heaviest clutch I could find went in it. I brought it home hear 170 miles from where I had it, just put plates on it and went. new u-joints in the driveline, spicer lock out hubs, drive train on this is solid. One time from the pavement, I had a tractor trailer in the driveway, got stuck on ice and snow, was dropping off a storage trailer, that old K10 with a fresh drive train and all the rest, in low gear, gave enough assist to get that tractor and trailer moving, quite a load, I was shocked, figured I was way over my head, but being on the pavement, flat ground. Good, simple trucks, mine has sat a long time body not so good, still ok for a plow truck, I'd save all the drivetrain, engine, axles etc. and build another, favorite would be a step side, 350/4spd, spicer lock out hubs, and whatever else makes sense, thought I'd share that, having an interest in '61-'66 Ford and '67-'72 Ford as well, K series were also a big time favorite too !

My first vehicle was a 65 Mustang.

Had a 65 Mustang convertible for a while, until it was stolen. Wish I still had that one, too.

I'm doing the same, looking for something older since
all the new vehicle manufacturers have decided to not sell
ANY 4x4 V8 trucks with manual transmissions.
Every new one I've bought it got harder and harder to find a manual, even moving up in weight class. Now, I just get a flat No, not made.
(seriously, no TRUCKS available with manuals...c'mon)
I was hoping to find a decent old one to redo, but looks like it's not gonna happen.
Like said, buying one that has been redone or stored looks like the only way..at big $

Late '70s early '80s Chevy trucks are rare as hen's teeth around here. Most of them rusted away to nothing by 1990. Occasionally you'll find a derelict, or a show truck, but not much in between.

In the future you won't have to worry about your manual transmission vehicle getting stolen as much, people won't know how to drive them.

Keep looking. Several years ago when I was looking for a truck, I couldn't find a Dodge diesel in my price range that wasn't trashed. I'd been looking for nearly a year when I stumbled on a 97 Ford F350 with the 7.3 diesel and less than 100,000 miles in near mint condition. It was a few years older than what I was looking for, but it was in such good condition and good price, I got it. No regrets.

That's already happening. Read an article months ago about car thief that got caught. The car he was trying to steal was manual and he didn't know how to drive it.

They must of been rare trucks, I thought 67 would have had a 283 and the 68's had the junk 307's which ate camshafts and the 350 came in 1970 or so.

I have a 72 chevy 4x4, 3/4, auto..350 with 4 brrl in her..Great truck.. Neeeds the typical work done on it..rockers, cab corners, etc. I tried to sale it year ago when I got the F250 3/4 but didnt succeed. Figure Id keep it to tow hay trailer through field.. easier to get in and out of than the newer F250..

1967 had either straight 6, 283, 327's. I cannot recall on if they offered big block pickups in 67. 307 and 350 did not make their way into them until 1968 models. Dad and I each had 1967 pickups. Dads had came with a 283, and mine was a 327. Another odd thing is the TH 350 transmission was not released till 68, so 1967 pickups with 3 speed auto only had the TH400 trans (or powerglide).

We bought a new, 1973 Chevy with a 350 4bbl. Worst piece of crap we ever owned. Had always been Chevy people. After the problems, (it was a lemon) and zero service or help from the head shed, we trade it for a Ford in 1976 and never went back to Government Motors. 8 miles per gallon when it would run.

NNp,

Ive a 2010 dodge cummins with a stick. There must be a better way to shift. That throttle, and subsequent shifting is a lot to be desired.

I swear that the computer "allows", eventually, for me to rev the engine. There's a second or two delay from throttle to response.

I'd preferred to never have purchased the stick. It's too computer-controlled to be true.

I had a 74 3/4 ton Chevy with a 454. Ten MPG and dump in a quart of oil when you filled it up with gas. At the end, when you would slam the door, you would lose another # or 2 of rust.

Too bad Toyota doesn't make a 3/4 ton diesel.

Where is that CL phone #. I sure could use that on a couple of neighbors and their barking dogs!!

ya, you could tell the day was coming when they would be fazed out. With all the controls and throttle delays, it was getting tough to shift smoothly.
Worst was on the last new manual one I bought, in 06.
Truly amazing amount of driveline slop. Took it back and showed them...normal they said, 'ya don't notice it with an auto'..?!!
Tried every trick I know, nothing worked, clutch in-Clunk, clutch out-Clunk.
Drove me crazy and I traded it shortly after.

(if I reached under an old vehicle, in gear with the engine off and the driveshaft would turn that much back and forth.......I'd probably junk it :D )

Frank,

I think they are offering the V8 Cummins turbo diesel for 2015. I have seen some info on it. I think Nissan was trying to get it & Toyota jumped in and made a deal.
