Speaking of OIl Treatment

Being an engineer and shadetree farmer mechanic over the years, I've always been skeptic of after market snake oil additives and in general am NOT a fan. HOWEVER in the interest of fairness I wanted to share a couple of instances and brands WHICH ACTUALLY WORKED 100% (for auto trannys at least)

I had two different cars with high mileage auto trannys that started to hesitate way too longgggggg before they shifted (especially when cold), say first to second or second to third and/or got loosey goosey between shifts. So I added Lucas Auto Tranny Treatment AND WITHIN 50 MILES THEY STARTED WORKING PERFECTLY AND KEPT WORKING!!!!!!!!! How or why or the chemistry of detergents or seal softeners or cleaners I don't know but ONLY KNOW it worked perfect.........

Another car was a 2004 Ford Taurus with an auto tranny that vibrated and shuttered when it felt like it either shifted into overdrive or perhaps a lock up torque converter locked or unlocked (or whatever it was, it shuttered) and it was pretty bad. So I added Lucas same as above BUT IT DIDNT HELP ONE BIT hmmmmmmm. So I'm at Advanced Auto I believe and saw a product called SHUTTER STOP for auto trannys. It was only a few ounces in a squeeze out tube and Ima thinkin YEAH RIGHT, but since it specifically said IT STOPPED SHUTTER I thought what the heck and tried it. Low and behold, within only a few miles the shutter stopped and its worked perfect ever since yayyyyyy.

Soooooooo this may or may not work for your tranny or a particular problem IM ONLY SAYING it worked for me 100% in those three cars so there are at least a few situations where it cured a problem.......NO WARRANTY THIS IS NOTTTTTTTTT AN ENDORSMENT OR RECOMMENDATION BUT ONLYYYYYYYY A REPORT OF WHAT DID WORK FOR ME.

While I cant prove it helps or not, it may or may not, but its my vehicles and money and I'm happy so that's alllllllll that matters, but in like my RV I use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Oil plus Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer and I like it and in my mind I believe its good and worth the small added expense, but yall do whatever your little hearts desire, if your happy I'm happy, what a boring world it would be if we all has the same preferences lol to each their own I say.

Nuff said, Ol John T and all

Ford had a lot of problems with the Taurus transmissions. My neighbor had one and had problems and had it rebuilt at a local shop. He said there was a part that kept failing and Ford never recalled them. Hal

My nephew has a 2000 Dodge van with over 200K miles and has had the oil changed in the tranny.
He's still running it and the engine has never been rebuilt. He has the oil changed every 3000 miles. Hal

Have owned about six Taurus" over the years and never had a transmission problem with any of them. These alleged problems must be an urban legend.

I'll tell you,Lucas makes some good products. Their stuff has stopped many a leak for me.

The one I reported on was a 2004 model with just over 100 K Miles, the bad shutter problem in this Taurus was UNFORTUNATELY a fact and NOT any legend. However, Shutter Stop sure cured it yayyyy

Lockup convertors will shudder when the friction modifiers get depleted in the oil..either add a limited slip additive or change out the fluid. Been there..done it...also wet brakes in loaders and tractors..as the friction modifiers get depleted, they tend to shudder and NOT STOP..so..once again..add a friction modifier or change out the fluid!

I have been useing Lucas and Sea Foam products for years with good results. I have had gaskets and seals that were seeping and using Lucas Oil Stabilizer and they stopped seeping. I have 1987 Ranch King (MTD) 18HP twin cylinder(B&S engine) garden tractor with over 1,600 hours and never been wrenched and it has run on nothing but Shells 15-40 with Lucas oil stabilizer from very first oil change.

I am not a big fan of snake oil either, but if a container of snake oil that costs just a few dollars MIGHT cure the transmission troubles, versus a several thousand dollar rebuild, why not give it a try?

Put 20% Lucas oil treatment in a C10 Caterpillar engine that was burning 1-2 gallons of oil a day.
Cut oil consumption to less than a quart a day.
Did the same on a Cat 3208 generator that was wet stacking. Dried it up in less than 5 minutes.
Engine only had 300 hours on it.
Up until 4 years ago I thought all additives were
just a money grabbing scene and the only one I used was STP for bearing assembly.

It's those GMO modifiers.
I can't get near any of the engery conservation with slip agents.

It just slips my clutches.

Brings me to tears when I can remember how fast it happens

modify
friction

wrench in the works

I had to put it in the last Deere I had to get it dried up so I could get rid of it. lol

JohnT,
Many years ago I purchased snake oil treatment at Bridgefest. They showed it in a running slant 6 with the oil pan removed. See how well it works.

Well I purchased a bottle, put in car when I changed oil. Then on Christmas day, while driving to N. Indiana, my daughter says, "Dad what's that red light blinking?" It was the check engine light. Nothing open. Roads were snow covered. Speeds under 40 mph car engine was shaking. I stopped and checked oil and water. Both were fine, so we drove for another hour.

Long story short, I needed to install a new O2 sensor. The new sensor said, DON'T USE OIL ADDITIVES. That was the first and last time I used snake oil.

My contribution to this thread is Siloo Hydra Valve Clean. (I believe it is still available.)

I too am not a believer in snake oils but Hydra Valve Clean was recommended to me nearly 50 years ago by a very experienced independent mechanic.

I've used it several times over the years in engines with noisy hydraulic lifters (This was once not an uncommon malady but improved engine oils and service intervals have made it much less common.). It always worked as claimed.

Not an urban legend. I worked in a transmission shop for a year or so, about 1998-1999, and we averaged two Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable transmission jobs a week(Omaha NE area).

Got pretty quick at pulling and replacing them too! Could have one out within 45 minutes of getting it on the hoist.
