70 Years Ago........

As I type this, 70 years ago today ships were loading to cross the English Channel to the beaches of Normandy, aircraft were being loaded for paratroop drops and southern England looked like a large military exercise.

70 years ago, my Uncle Frank had about two weeks to live- he died at St. Lo.

My Dad and Uncle Larry were waiting on orders to move up into the line for transport to an LSD- which, by the way got lost, so they didn't go in on D+2, but arrived on D+6 anyway.

Tomorrow is a special day. If you know a Vet who is still here, make a special effort to thank him. And, even if you don't, thank any Vet. And, make a special prayer for those who didn't come back. Because of their sacrifice, you can freely do it.....

I will thank my grandfather if he is listening. He hit Normandy D+2, came home started raising his family and past away from a heart attack the day before Kennedy was shot.

Had an uncle that went through the war, was in one of the big battles, Normandy, D Day?...

Very quiet, polite Godly man, a true servant. Devoted his life to helping others, worked as a reserve deputy in Hendersonville NC. He freely shared details of gruesome crime scenes, told me of recovering bodies after an airline crash...

I asked him about the war once. It was like he went into a trance, didn't say a word for several minutes. First time I ever heard him raise his voice.

"I don't care what you've heard 'bout what went on over there, what you've see in the movies, the TV. It was a thousand times worse!"

He stomped off in a rage, slammed the door! Never seen him act that way. Few minutes later he came back, like nothing ever happened. My Mom said he won't talk about it, don't ask him!

He's been gone about 20 years now, still miss him and his stories!

70 years, Five months ago I was born. Just before Dad left in the Army for Eur. My Brother was born while he was over there. Dad never talked about it either. I severed in the Army 63-66. 65-66 Vietnam.

My wife had an older cousin who was awarded the Bronze Star as an Army Lieutenant in Germany during WWII. All he would ever say was he got his platoon lost in the Black Forrest and they gave him the Bronze Star for it.

He never divulged any details, even to his own brother who was also a combat vet.

Right after jump school I remember getting to Ft. Bragg in the wee hours of a March "65 morning, SF training headquarters at Smoke Bomb Hill, waiting in the hall and seeing all the jump pics from Sicily, Salerno, St. Mere Eglise, St. Lo, Holland Market Garden......and thinking, Man what a legacy we have to live up to! Truly the greatest generation, and the rules of engagement were.....to win!
