IH 806 pto rebuild

Does this take special tools to take apart? I got the clutch packs off and that is about it. I removed the keeper for the big spring, hope that wasn't a mistake, and the snap ring under it, but still can not get the case to separate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Once the clutch pack is out you need to compress the piston return spring enough to be able to remove the snap ring and then release the pressure on the spring. The piston can then be removed. There are two 1/4" NC threaded holes to use for pulling it out. (Depending on the age of the PTO there may be a snap ring that limits the travel of the piston but an 806 would not normally have it.) The next step is to press the clutch drum down enough to remove the retaining snap ring. Once the drum is off you can remove the two 1/2" bolts on the back of the PTO and separate the castings.

Thanks for the info, that's a big help. I'll get back at it this weekend. Mine does have the 1/4 inch bolt holes, so it should be easy when you know what to do!

I do have a question though. Is it really cheaper to do that yourself? I mean Harvey Gross has them already rebuilt for last I knew about 800.00 just drop it in and give him the old one. Our local dealer is reasonable if you take the unit in for them to do also.

The kit is 180.00 from alstates tractor supply, so I figure my labor and cuss words, think I'm still ahead.
