Daughter and I saw this ambulance in our road ramblings this weekend. Thought it was neat and haven't seen that many of them restored so thought I'd share.

A family friend of ours has a 56 Chevy, limo.... It is about 40 feet long!!!! Another guy in the local club has 60's hearse.. Not sure what the make/model is, but it is all black with oak sides, and it is pretty long as well! He is working on restoring it right now...

That is pretty cool!!! I wonder what is under the hood?? Straight 6? Bryce

I told my many years ago I was going to buy a used hearse and make a truck. She said she wouldn't ride in it. There was a man that lived near us that was the local undertaker. He kept the old hearse and used it for a truck. He later jumped off the bridge and died. Hal

Can't remember what brand, but there was one in a local junkyard years ago that I would have loved to had and restored. If I remember correctly it had a flathead Ford which made it even cooler in my opinion.

Very unique! Don't see many vehicles like that being restored. Around here about that time most of the ambulances were built on Cadillac chassis.

I remember in the early fifties, there was a junkyard in Greensboro, must have been the oldest one in town, had three or four rows of Cadillac and Packard ambulances and hearses. Must have been forty or fifty sitting there. Some went back to the late thirties and early forties.

When I worked at Rendering plants I always threatened to get a hearse and personalized plates "soylent green". Good taste prevailed and it didn't happen.

The one I am talking about was on Hwy 160 on the way to Rockhill, and was called Big 160 Salvage. They had all the old cars in a spot in the back. I think the newest thing in there (this was back in the mid to late 80's) was somewhere around a '65. I know the place closed down about 20 years ago and is now a housing development. Thankfully I also heard that the majority of the really old stuff was actually sold off instead of just being crushed. I hope the old ambulance, along with quite a few old shoebox Chevys, are still out there and being given another life by someone that loves them.

Ok... husband just explained that to me. Probably a good thing that good taste prevailed. LOL!

No, they changed to that style with the 1948 models. The '46 and '47 models had the headlights in closer to the hood and the parking lights were on the outside edge of the fenders.

There is a website that has advertisements, brochures, etc. for cars from way back when.

Go to

www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html

and click on Ford, then scroll down to the 1948 truck brochure.

I was there back then and my memory about Ford trucks is pretty good.

Have a good day.

You correct. They didn't make major body changes to pickups same year as major changes to cars
