replanting skips

have 6-8 skips in my corn field, wondering how to plant one row back in. was thinking a one row unit hitched to back of tractor, but how would it be ground driven, was there a planter that was driven off the press wheel in the back? how have you other people done it in the past?

Some use JD 71 unit behind a garden tractor.....IH also made similar, maybe others had self-contained units.

Couple years ago I did two quarter mile long rows with an Earthway garden push seeder! Was a pain to do it that way, and had to refill it several times, but it actually worked fairly well. I don't want to repeat it though!

Paul,

That"s the way we did it back in the 50s when I was a kid.
However, we were SMALL farmers and I doubt we had any single field a quarter mile long. LOL

I have used an earthway hand planter also for smaller replant jobs.
We use the same planter for small plots of sweet corn and Indian corn.

If your planter isn't too big, 4or 6 row and your corn isn't real big so that it'll grow back if you run it over take your time and use it. Just plant off to the side of the row so that you don't run all of the corn down and only have seed in the one box that you need or shut each row unit off if you don't need them.

I had a deere planter that was press wheel drive. sat the units in the barn because I thought they were too good to throw away. a couple of years ago my neighbor made me a rig that looks like an atv log arch that one planter unit fits under the arch. you can slip right down the skip rows with the atv and not see any trace of you being there.

Allis Chalmers had a few different models, IHC had the 295 as well as the 185 and I think another model.

Many many people are converting old planters to a 2 row 3pt hitch, running a ground drive rigged up off a wheel, and selling thrm for about $1000. If you are handy with metal, can build your own, get a 4 row wide 7000 build 2, sell one, keep the other for about free....

As was said,a 'unit' planter is the ticket.JD 70/71 is the most common. All MFGers offered a unit planter. Here is a pic of a JD 70.Set up as a 4x30 corn planter.Set it up on a (short) tool bar.Or try to find an old 2 row outfit.

Years ago, Dad, 2 of my brothers and I planted 6 acres of corn by hand. Go down the row and drop 2 or 3 seeds every 18 inches or so and kick the dirt over with your toe. It can be done!

I've got a JD80 mounted on a tool bar with a wavy cutter in the front. Use a MH 81 with aftermarket 3 pt to pull it. Haven't used it for several years, but did work great for both beans and corn. The newer JD 70/71 units work better and many are being gobbled up to make small food plots or for replanting washouts/skips and therefore can be expensive. A single row is OK but a two row would be nice. Replanted rows are typically not perfectly straight, so cultivating could be a little tricky. No problem harvesting.
