cub cadet electric clutch

Mowing grass today. Shut the deck off, moved the next patch, pulled the button, and all I got was a scraping noise. It sounds like its halfway engaged, but not enough to get the deck to run. I have never messed with one of these before. Is there a friction plate or something thats out? Or is it an electrical problem?

It works much like the clutch on an automotive air conditioner.

It could be electrical. Be sure the battery is fully charged. You'll need a test light or volt meter. With the engine off and the clutch wires still connected, turn on the PTO. (You may have to bypass the seat switch or have someone hold the seat down for the test.) Locate the electrical plug near the clutch, probe the connector with the test light or volt meter lead. The positive connection should give battery voltage or bright test light. The negative connection should give 0 volts or no test light. Check the wire between the plug and the clutch carefully for breaks or shorting.

If it passes this test, it's getting power. The clutch will have to be replaced, possibly repaired if serviceable.

I had the identical problem on my JD 112 a couple times.
one time it was a bearing in the deck that seized so either the clutch had to slip or the engine stall , second time it happened i found a half broke wire not supplying enough juice to the magnet.
on two other occasions it was the clutch plate broke a strap were it is riveted to the hub. and made the plate run out of orbit.
The the third time it gave me grief i fixed the clutch by getting rid of the 3 straps and replacing it with a triangular piece of sheet metal incorporating all 3 fastening points in 1 solid circle.
Been trouble free for the last 10 or so years.

These clutches are pretty pricy so it pays to try to fix them.

check the ground. I was mowing with mine. It was engaging and disengaging. Charged battery didn't help. was going to replace battery, when I unhooked the ground, it came loose from where it is attached at the base of the motor. PIA to reattach. Double nutted to make sure it doesn't come loose again!!

so i let it cool down..then started it..and it worked fine. So im thinking its electrical in nature. Could a bad positive battery cable cause this? I have a corroded positive battery clamp that im just getting around to replacing.

I just went through the same problem with a deere clutch. it would work than get hot and not work. The bearings go bad and it does exactly that. I had to buy a new one and $150.00 later it works great!
