I am a retired engineer, I got to do some bean planting with a rented JD 750 no-til drill like the one in the picture. What is the best row spacing for beans, and does plant spacing make a big difference? Someone said they liked the inter-row planters, e.g. 30" corn and 15" beans. The JD Salesman said the only downside with those is in heavier trash you can have plugging.
Comments on beans, row width and spacing??

Your cab on the IH is quite a bit different than mine. And that would be the new planter also you were telling me about. Nice clean equipment!
Depends on your soils and climate and your 'issues' be it weeds, dry, wet, etc.....
Drilled beans stay shorter, use more sunlight faster, and shade out weeds faster.
But they also get white mold much worse in a wet climate.
30 inch spacing has little mold issues, can yield well in a good normal year, and use one planter for everything less overhead cost. In a less than good year the weeds can come through very easy, and yields can be lower in hail or insect damage because the bushy beans don't have time to readjust to bad conditions.
Often a 15 inch row is a best of both worlds setup.

Nice pictures of that setup and the ground. We didn't have a field big enough to turn that equipment around. My late dad would've like to seen that setup. They were probably using mules and horses when he graduated from Ag college in 1912. He's in the bottom row in the third picture from the right. Hal

This is the 1586 and 800 we have used the past several years, still have it, we switched to 30" corn so got a different planter, 1586 won't run the 7200 john deere planter, so had to go with a green tractor too.

Yes, your dad and those men back then would be impressed by the equipment used now days, but for the machinery and resources they had, it is amazing what they accomplished and the work they got done. I have a lot of respect for the generations before us, they were a dedicated hard working group.
