OT: How many carry a Leatherman?

I think of how many times a day I use my Leatherman or similar
multitool a day and I know its at least 10 times a day. I have had
some of those cheaper ones but got a Charge and love it though
its a bit heavy. My mom got me that one for my 21st birthday and I
love it. My sister got me one of the Skeletool ones they have and I
carry it with me everywhere. I feel naked without it lol. I also work
on the gas wells and use it in my line of work daily. Don't know
what I would do without it. Sorry for the long post just had some
time at work tonight and was wondering what you all think of
them.

Awesome tool. The only place or time mine is not on my side is when I go to weekly church. LOL Greatest multi tool ever in my opinion.

I started carrying a Leatherman in my pocket about a year ago and wonder now how I lived without it. With everything I carry in my pockets already I never even notice the extra weight.

I pinched my palms a few times between the handles of one of these useless contraptions when the jaws slid of what i was holding,..hurted like hell,. the third time it happened i got a blood blister,..AUCH &%#@&% you @#%$ thing!
I threw the piece of crap as deep in the bush as i could throw it and got a [b:3ae01bc618]real [/b:3ae01bc618]pair of pliers.

Carried one for years, actually I recently had two of them (yes I use one for work and a heavier one at home on weekends) replaced under warranty. Both were worn out and they didn't carry parts for them any more. Both replaced with brand new units, complete with another 25yr warranty! How's that for good back up service!

I carry a Wave. Always have it with me. I have two, one breaks or gets worn out I have a backup. It's not a replacement for all tools, but it's saved me a long walk countless times.

Have a Gerber. Carried it camping, when I used to camp. Now it lives in my Alto Sax case. It has come in handy on countless diverted mishaps on gigs over the years. Now that i'm retired from teaching, I carry my little Case stockman knife. Couldn't carry a knife from years 5 thru 36 at school; fixed alot of instruments before then. That's when the world started getting crazy and politically correct, all at the same time.

I'm on my 5th or 6th, maybe 7th Leatherman. I prefer the top end, more expensive ones but had to go with the bottom of the line job this time. Work fine. The key to using a Leatherman is to have a good sheath for it and not to lose it!!! I also carry a Schrade multi-tool that is based on a small needle nose Vice Grip. Very, very handy. Again, a good sheath is key.

I cannot function without them anymore. Running to get a pliers or knife or screwdriver drives me nuts and is a huge waste of time.

I'm a fan of my Victorinox Spirit; it is on my belt six days out of the week and gets used often. Its thin enough to be carried in a compact sheath that doesn't get in the way but it's big and strong enough for real work. I own a few Gerbers and have handled Leathermans and others but believe the quality of the Victorinox is superior.

(quoted from post at 11:47:28 05/27/14) dittos on the gerber, my go to tool, for investigating all sorts of problems...
ame here dave, about 10 years ago a friend of mine found an American made Gerber that must have been priced wrong. He got it for $19.95 and gave it to me for my birthday. They can pinch you but after a couple of times you get more careful when using it.

I've had Gerber, Scrade, and leatherman tools. NONE held up very well. I quit carrying them about 10 years ago. My BIL just bought a new Leatherman that cost $110. It APPEARED to be way better then they used to be, but - at that price - I'll never own one. I'll stick to pliers and a pocket knife.

my favorite definition of the multipurpose tool is " its the tool you use when you don"t actually have the right tool for the job with you" . Bill

Somehow I ended up with 4 Leatherman tools. Gave one to my nephew, one to my grand nephew and kept 2 for myself. Only used 1 once. They don't seem all that useful to me compared to the tools that I've used all of my life.

I carry a pair of the "CeeTee" 8" pliers and a Barlow pocket knife. If I need anything else, I go to the shop and get the correct tool for the job.

I have had four different Leatherman's. I have one on my belt at all times. I have forgot that it was there going into an airport, and walked clear out to the car to leave it there. The best one was the super tool. Carry a Leatherman Rebar now, but want a heavier one.

I"ve carried my leatherman for 8 years now...put it on my belt everyday (used hard and put away wet) broke the tip on the pliers 3 years ago..i just filed down the long side to be even with the broke side..not many days go by without it being used...starting to get hard to get the knife and file out(time for some 3in1 oil.....love my leatherman....dont get dressed without it.

The "multi-tool" I carry is the 'Spinden's Farm tool'.Does everthing.Lots more useful(to me) than a 'Leatherman'.Doesn't have a bunch of crap that never gets used.Wore out the first one(pictured),lost the second...Am lost without it.A 'new' one is on order.

I carry a small pair of vise grips and have for over 45 years. They are the real ones not the imatation.

Carry mine all the time, everywhere. Don"t know how long but it was the very first release of the first locking model of the Leatherman.

wow - deltared - I haven't seen one of those in decades.

I used to have one just like it when I was a kid.

I'm sure I lost it in the woods somewhere.

I have pinched myself to many times, do not carry them anymore. A lot of my customers do not allow them as tools onsite anymore.

When my second sheath wore out I sent to LM for a nylon one. Also bought a larger one to wear on my other side to carry the 3 wrenches I carry, 9/16 down to 1/4. Started carrying the 2 bigger ones to adjust the baler years ago.

Really? You mean that you used to buy them? I made these 15 years ago.I thought it my own 'invention'.Must have made 15 pr over the years to give as gifts.Even sold a pr once.

Well, I personally thought that they were always too big and in the way, that is, until I got one... :)

One year at a BSA Camp ( I was probably 12 or 13?) I bought a Winchester, it came with a holster, tool set (drive bits and such) and the "Multi Tool" itself, ever since, it has gone EVERY where with me. It has a file, 3 knives, pliers, cutters, and a LOT more.

I have morn the sheath for it completely apart, and it is long gone, and I never used the bits, so they are just sitting in a drawer, but I use that kinfe every day.

It is currently breathing it's last breath, rivets are loose, stuff is bent and broken, but it just keeps on going!!

Among other things, I use the cutters in the pliers the most when I am building fence at the neighbors, they will cut RIGHT through a twisted, double strand of fencing wire... Just amazing!!

I would buy another one again in a heart beat, they are AWESOME!!! Bryce

Only used one once and they seemed like a very good device for pinching your hand. The large company retired from has a similar opinion and if a mechanic/engineer/operator does use a Leatherman or similar multitool, that action is considered a violation of company rules and sufficient grounds for three days suspension without pay.

Been carrying a Gerber for about 15 or 16 years now that was given to me. Gotten used to it....

What a misorable bunch of cusses to work for. I would leave for better places.

I don't carry a leatherman for the sake of it hanging off my belt and being heavy because it has a bunch of junk that I never use. I prefer a more compact unit. I carry the smallest set of knipex pliers (knipex calls them "cobra") in my left front pocket. They are light weight, not bothersome and are handier than a pocket on a shirt. No way no how would I trade them for a leatherman or vise grips.

Knipex designs their pliers in such a fashion that it is impossible to mash your fingers with the handles. The metal used in the jaws seems to also be better than vise grip. My pliers have been used and abused but the jaws still look almost new.

I agree some have to many functions ill never use. I like the skeletool. It has pliers, knife, screwdriver, and a clip/bottle opener to hang from a belt loop and weighs less then 5 ounces. I'd never trade it for anything.

Good Evening

I have had the Buck , Gerber & the Leatherman .
I didn t like the Buck gave it to my Nephew . I still have the other two . I like the Gerber the best . I don t carry it very often since I retired.

I've owned at least 3 or 4 different models of Leatherman. How are you guys managing to pinch your hands? My hands are pretty beefy and I take an XL glove. Never had a hint of a problem like that.

actually I see now in the picture that yours was fabbed - and I guess the one I had probably had a flat blade screw driver - like this picture.

now that I see this picture, I remember always having that sharp screw driver blade poking into me.

so maybe it wasn't EXACTLY like yours - it was 40 years ago since I last saw it.

Ive been carrying a Gerber for at least 20 years, tried a leatherman a few times be never fails to pinch my hand. So I keep going back to Gerber. Our state surplus property sells them almost daily, usually get a good used one for 20 or 30 bucks. Mine is essential to me enough that I keep 2 spares at the ready.

In fact, I give one (along with a cap, safety glasses, water jug, and pair of steel toes) to my new hires. Not having any of the above when you come to work will get you sent home.

Used to carry a leatherman. Had a couple originals and a super tool, but lost them while I was driving truck. Don't like the new ones, too much stuff, too many loose parts.
Now I have an $8 pocket knife from Menard's (actually a pretty good knife) and a pair of Wilde slip-joints. They're the same price as Channellock at NAPA and twice the plier. And if you goober up the wire cutters (like I keep doing with tensile wire) you can tear them apart and clean them up with a file.

jackknife in one pocket always, roll of electrical tape in the other.(E-tape holds and patches too)
if well-equipped, pliers in my back pocket, screwdriver in front pocket. Never a screwdriver in my back pocket, I'd rather poke myself than put a hole in a seat.
Baling or fence wire is on every tractor.
Anything else....I walk and get it. Every time I use a 'make-do' tool instead of the right one, I end up with a new scar........

Buddy and I were flying the other day. We went through the airport security check and he forgot and had a nice leatherman in his carry on bag. Needless to say, he lost it in the trash can before they would let us go.
