Irrigateing and rain

We are very dry here.We have to irrigate our crops to even get them to sprout. It rained here all night, puddles everywhere. We still have to go out and change water. Grrr. the water is ordered in,have to use it or loose it.Seems like a contradiction.Irrigateing in the rain while liveing in a desert. Now we have to be extra dillegant.Once the rain sprouts the seed,we have to get the water to it,or it dies when the rain dries. We have no subsoil moisture,so all moisture must be applied.Rain is a 'bonus',but we really cant count on it for our crops.Farming in the desert....not for wimps.

Yep,

The only time I ever turned off the water was if it rained continually for three days. Dirty job 'taint it? :>(

From a 'water company'.In this case,Orchard City Irrigation District.(OCID)The water has a yearly assecessment that covers the cost.Approxamately $50 per share.A 'share' is usually 1 acre foot.Different 'companys' use different measurements,assecessments.....The flows are (again) ususally measured in cubic feet per second(second feet).Again each 'company',group,association....each has their own set of rules.Sound confuseing? It is.

I didn't know there was irrigation in your area. I always noticed it in the Alamosa part of the state and I knew Grand Junction area was relatively dry but I thought your area got more rain.

What is the yearly average where you're at?

Hey Red, show us your irrigation system. For me, irrigation on the front range meant shoveling cuts and setting tubes. Ditch water was allocated as you said but when unavailable we had to run the pump. We grew sugar beets, corn , onions, pinto beans, and alfalfa northeast of Greeley. I'd bet money 90 percent of this discussion board wouldn't know what a 2 inch siphon tube was, let alone start it! Ever have a nice set of water running 40 rows only to come back 2 hours later and find 18 rows stopped and the ditch broke out because of half dead carp!

I use mostly gated pipe. But I have some open dirt ditch.Only one place has the cement ditch.I only farmed the center pivot sprinkler for one year.

About 6 inches.Acording to an 'old timer',Delta County is the driest county in the state of Coulrado.'Peach Valley'(my 'neighborhood')is the driest part of Delta County

The biggest part of the Uncompagre Valley (Delta/Montrose) is irrigated from snow melt water,Stored in BlueMesa,Ridgeway, and Taylor reservoirs.Other smaller reservoirs are also used.It is slowly released over the course of the summer. The drought of the last two years has affected our supplys.we were down to 40% at time last summer.Rains saved our butts!!!Uncompagre Valley Water Users Association(UVWUA) is the largest system in the state. That is where I get the water for the 'home place'.

Thanks for the photos, lots and lots of memories came back after seeing those. Ever start a 6 inch tube. Some used a soccer ball, but a pant leg cut off of an old pair of jeans and some twine works good too.
Used the big tubes to flood the alfalfa.

Steve, when I made the remark yesterday about the ground looking dry, I didn't realize that you were almost entirely dependent on irrigation. I guess it's what you get used to but I'm not sure if I could farm that way.
