fencing a garden

We grow a fair sized garden of sweet corn each year and have the same problems I read here. Coons deer the like. I was told by a man with years of experience that we should put 2 electric fences up as deer have great eye sight but no depth perception and coons hate electricity. I guess this will be a year long experiment.

If I read correctly those varmints are going to hate electricity in Tennessee. They voted to bring the chair back.

I've been using a Parmak 12 volt fence for 5 years and can tell you it absolutely works. Nothing gets by it. One strand at 1 inch, 6 inches, 18 inches and 3 to 4 feet and you are good to go.

I put a fence around mine one year and couldn't get the electric to work and it still kept our the deer. Tractor supply sells a deer repellent that works pretty well. Has to be reapplied after every rain. Raccoons probably need the electric (or a shotgun)

the best thing that I have found to keep the deer and the coon out of the sweet corn patch is I go get on of my sons hounds and tie him along side of the patch when the coon and the deer think the corn is ripe to eat. The best part of this is he evens supplies the dog food for me because he knows that I will not buy the high dollar food that he gives his dogs. I do have to give him some sweet corn, but I would of done that any way.

I put a fence around mine each year, but the dang coons still slide under the fence. I've been live trapping them and the skunks. Had a coon get out of the trap last year, and could never get one back in it again.

I got an electric fence from Premier. It is actually an electrified net. Using a Parmak charger, and if I accidentally bump into it, it HURTS!!! YOW!!! So far has kept the varmints out except for a few birds and an occasional rabbit. A .22 with a scope can take care of the ones that do sneak in.

I get by with 1 wire 6 inches off the ground and another about 4 foot....haven't lost anything in 9 yrs.

Deer just hop right over a 4 ft fence, no problem at all.

agree
watching them from a treestand, standing still, no running start, nose up and then hop over obstacles considerably higher than that.

a regular fence, with an additional electric wire a very short distance away with tassels on it might work.
They will see the electric wire.
they will see they can't clear both fences and if they are too close together for a landing between fences for a second jump, they won't attempt it.
Something with very bad footing on the deer side of a fence will discourage an attempt too.
I have seen an obstacle they normally jump over, they walk around it if water or mud is on the jump attempt side.
