My Dodge is due for a smog check. I have a check engine light. The code said overdrive solenoid problem. It never shifted to overdrive as long as I owned the truck, which was ok with me. I had the solenoid replaced. Same problem. The guy at the tranny shop said it looks like the computer is bad. You need to go to the dealer. So I took it to the nearest dealer They have had it a week now still can't find the problem. Yesterday they ordered a computer. They found a repaired computer for 1,040.00. Does this sound a little high? Wish I kept my 80 Ford F350 now. Stan

I have a 96 2500 Dodge, in some of those years the OD shift was also temperature controlled, meaning it would not shift to OD until after the engine warmed up a little. "Might be a temperature sensor problem." As far as a computer goes, I would think a salvage yard could fix you up with one for much less, a transmission is only around $400 or so - used. The computer will re-boot itself if you shut the key off, un-hook the battery cable, wait 10 seconds and re-hook the battery cable. This may even reset the idiot light.

Are they going to guarantee the replacement computer will fix it? Yes, it seems a little high. There are two solenoids in the pan that have the same part number if I remember correctly.

You can get a reman from RockAuto for $190 + $68 core. Requires programming by someone local. Likely another $100-$150.

You cannot use a salvage yard computer in an OBD2 Chrysler product. Once a VIN is programmed, it cannot be changed outside of a reman facility. I have to give people this sad news when they hand me their eBay computer. GM is another story, all but the latest models can have the VIN changed.

Uhhh ..... let me guess - you own a Ford, right? And here's a lol right back at ya -

That's funny, the one MOPAR rag did it all the time with Neon computers. If they didn't want to spend the money or take the time they'd just unplug the security system.
