John Deere 50 won't charge

We have a John Deere 50 with a good generator, good voltage regulator and is wired according to diagram. When we cross the battery to the frame, it shows charging, which according to some posts means bad voltage regulator but have tried 2 new ones so pretty sure we are missing something else. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

If you mean you connect the battery ground terminal to the tractor frame and then it charges, you have a bad battery ground cable, or connection at the frame end. If that is not what you mean we do not have a clue what you are telling us. Jim

"When we cross the battery to the frame" What does that mean?

Sorry for my mistake and thanks for trying to help. I should have said when we cross the field to the frame it charges. Thanks again!

Smple test ground the field and if that makes it charge the reg is bad if that doesent make it charge the gen is bad. You didnt say 6 or 12v or whether the reg is for pos ground or neg as which ground are you using gen doesent care but the reg sure does. Did you use the gens # when you got a reg as they need to be matched.Where did you get the reg as lots are sold at discount ect. Your gen is a Delco Remy so thats where to go for a reg at a dealer who sells Delco.

Thanks for all good information you provided.

Ground the field and if it charges the regulator section of the voltage regulator is bad.

If it still does not charge, then jumper from generator armature to regulator "BAT" terminal. This bypasses the cut out relay in the regulator. If it now charges the cut out is bad.

If it still does not charge you have bypassed both sections of regulator so attention then shifts to being a generator or wiring problem.

When jumpering the generator ARM or FLD studs be careful, as arcing can ruin the threads.

Do not assume that a new regulator is a dependable working device.

Thanks for this post. Thanks for being so specific in what to try. We are thinking wiring problem but just cannot get it figured out. Thanks again.
