Dan, I assume you are doing this for a hobby, and I hate to bust your bubble, but if you can't wean 9 or 10 pigs per sow you would go broke as a hog farmer.

If we had an old sow that had 4 pigs, she would be on the next truck to the slaughter house once the pigs were off of her. Can't afford to feed a "slacker"

I am not giving you heck, just saying dont give up your day job.

Reminds me when I grew up on parents farm in s. Wis. Dad would always start with first time mothers, some would have small litter and lay on most of them. Others would have 9 or 10 and take good care of all them. Dad would never keep same sows to breed again. I always told him to keep back proven sows for another litter. Cute babies! It was my job to take care of the hogs. Nice pictures!

Well, Gene, this is a first litter for her as well as for me. From what I remember from when Dad was raising them back in the 80s, first litters were usually around a half dozen. Second litter and all others were 12 to 14.

I agree, if she's only going to wean 4 out of each litter, it's time for her to go to auction. But I'll see how she does on the next litter before cutting her loose.

I have 3 more bred right now, plus a couple of gilts picked out for future brood stock. If a sow hasn't proved her mothering abilities by the second litter, well, fat sows have been bringing a dime a pound more than butcher hogs around here lately.

She's in an old wood frame chicken house. The floor rotted out years ago. It makes a real cozy 3-stall farrow house. I have another one just like it right next to it, but facing the other direction.

Mixed breed. I bought the sow (gilt) already bred, so I never met the boar. The sow is all white with slightly flopped ears. She might be a Chester, but she looks more like a York/Duroc cross. One pig does have a reddish tint.

I have 3 more gilts bred and waiting on a couple other gilts to come of age. I also have a young boar I bought by accident. I didn't look too close at the auction and ended up with 2 boars. I traded one away to another farm to breed her gilt. I'm supposed to get all but 2 pigs from each of the first 2 litters in exchange for the boar.

Counting these, I'm now at 39 head. I had as many as 45 head last winter. I'm trying to work it out to where I have about 10 ready for market each month. It's been a struggle to get up and running, but I'm just about there. I have a gap from June delivery until the early Fall, but hopefully, I can get things running smoothly.
