OT: Life is Great

Today was the second trip to the dentist, first trip for extractions and immediate dentures. Only had 6 teeth and 3 roots pulled, that was up above the gum line, they are a great outfit, the Dentist called after hours to see how I was doing.
Today, Son took me down for second visit for some alignment and checkup on gum healing.Doing good so far, they have another scheduled appointment next week.I got a million dollar smile now,so I can sign autographs for my fans, I know there is some on here.lol. Paid cash and never had to jump on anyones dime either.lol.

On a side note there is water standing in fields and ditches, looks like miniature lakes, going to be a while before the fields are dried out down there. On the way back, up here, there was a couple of farmers already plowing fields getting ready for planting.

Anyway, I will encourage you folks, even at my age of 79, if you require dental work, do it, because your presence in this world bring pleasure, to some, not all. Being truthful and polite is the way to go. My next endeavor is to get cataract surgery after the surgeon give his examination, and my hearing aides will be in June.
Growing old is grand, with lots of support.

LOU

Glad it worked out spent a lot of money on mine in the end it was better with them out. i was lucky and talked to people before i did it and left enough in the bottom to anchor that plate i can tackle anything now. one bad note came to while he was still pulling them and was told hang on got three left when he got done surprised the nurses when i got out of the chair 2 nurses tossed me back in i was informed chair had wheels they were going to wheel me to recovery.i still walked out of recovery

farmerwithmutt,
It's true, better with them out, as infections at an older age can cause serious effects. So far I'm happy with them, just takes a little getting used to.
The worst ones were the ones that were on the top, hidden under gums.Took a while for the Dr to get them out, like you, but had no problem getting out of the place.Glad you've got yours taken care of, have to keep around as long as possible.

LOU

Paul from MI,
Thank you. I think if you keep a positive attitude, it helps. Thanks again for the nice reply.

I had mine all pulled and got dentures at age 63 . Family doctor said to get rid of teeth because poison from bad teeth is known to cause heart problems. They pulled my teeth and put the dentures in the same day ( bottoms first and then tops). You do eat soft foods for a few weeks. I wish I would have done it sooner. My teeth had always hurt and they could never find anything wrong. I had mine done in 2007-2008 and use nothing to hold them in and eat every thing. There are foods that you have to learn how to eat with dentures.

An infection in my FILs teeth lead to blood poisoning which rotted out a valve in his heart and caused numerous strokes. He lost the use of the left side of his body, and a good portion of his mind, in his late 50's. Sad part is he knew he had the infection and did nothing. Sadder still is that the doctors completely missed the infection prior to the strokes!

Some things you just don't mess around with.

Pays to take take of your teeth starting when you are younger. Dentist at least once a year, twice is better. Lesson for the younger folks out there!

Absolutely, best policy for sure. I'm not sure what happened in Lou's situation and as these things go, everyone is different, but it does pay.

I've always taken care of mine and there was a period of time that I did not go to the dentist, many years, but I did take good care of my dental hygiene. So good, I wore some of the enamel off at the base of the teeth, makes em real sensitive, have to use a soft brush, right technique and or they have all these new rechargeable brushes today, that clean better and are easier on the enamel. I used a soft brush too, but another factor is whitening toothpaste, I never knew it had pumice in it ! Also floss once a day, at least and brush the gums, all contributes to a healthy mouth, I used the ones on the Y already strung, and use them til they break, easy, takes no time and its a healthy thing to do. In that time frame I had a root canal on one tooth that a piece cracked off, an old filling, and it never got resolve, changed jobs/benefits, never had time etc, and it finally went sour on me, a back tooth, had to have it out, got infected eventually, but I healed up, not too bad to deal with, hopefully with this new job on the horizon I can get something to fill that gap. Since that one extraction, I've kept bi annual cleanings, had some fillings fixed, worn spots that were sensitive filled, but the teeth and gums are very healthy. Dentist is a friend of the family, he said after the extraction, thats way out of character for you, the rest are in excellent shape, 2 still very sensitive, if there were more like that, might have a different outlook. Hygienist said you're well on your way to keeping your teeth. I don't drink soda very often or sugary drinks, or foods that seem to cause problems. I would definitely recommend good at home dental hygene and the bi-annual cleanings, which even out of pocket is not that bad, I had to pay $150 for the cleaning 2 weeks ago, with x rays.

W_B,
A lot of truth to your statement, but there are a few things to consider also.

My first daughter had a double row of teeth,(two sets) had to have the first set pulled.Years later she passed away from cervical cancer, but kept all her teeth.I sure miss her smile.

Todays prescriptions can contribute to teeth decay , and health issues some such as diabetes,(i have) can also cause tooth decay and problems. Evidently my system was full of poison, a person would never realize, how tooth infection and poison could affect the whole body and other portions to feel poorly. Some of the pain that I had in my arms has gone away,I'm still using pain killers, but I feel wonderful. Gums are healing slow, as it's only the third day, and being diabetic helps slow healing also.

Thanks for the reply,
LOU

Billy,
You are right every situation is different,
I had good teeth all thru the military, except one eye tooth, which they ground open and left that way, because I didn't re-inlist. They said it was up to me to get it fixed on the outside. They never even bothered to fill it. My financial situation was weak as can be when discharged on and years later they had to be extracted. Some by dentists, some by my Son. I got a couple on my own. When I washed my mouth out with peroxide, I could feel the poison on the two extra teeth that was loose. Now I don't have that problem.I have hearing aids coming and cataract surgeon is due to asses his opinion on June 24th. I don't know what to expect in this situation, those that have done it could enlighten me as to a general idea, as each person is different. I thank you for your reply,
LOU

Sorry to hear about your FIL, your assumptions about teeth poisoning and effects is correct. Nothing to mess around with.

Gene,
Have you had problems swallowing and are yours pinned? Did you have both upper and lower done?Wish I could afford to have the pin job, trying to eat soft food for a 257 lb fellow is hard to swallow.lol.(pun intended)
My son had his uppers done and my SIL had both upper and lower done.I can get some good information from my Son on the difficulties on swallowing and inserting teeth.Awaiting to get all the appointments done and these temps ground to fit correctly as swelling eases down.

That's awesome Lou, anytime you can improve on your health. I too, never realized until that one tooth became a problem, suspected, that infection in this area can be a very serious problem. I went in, was in some pain, he extracted it, and flushed, cleaned, sanitized or whatever they do, I took antibiotics and that was that, was a slight infection, but let something like that go, of course the pain would probably make you get looked at.

That was the same problem with the root canal, they temporary filled it, then, literally when I was on my way home, I got called back into work, and I was a dedicated employee, so I went back, but that cancelled my appointment, and before you know it, time went by and I'll take responsibility for it, it got past me, with the results as mentioned above. I did not have dental coverage at some point, and with the ups and downs, + who likes going to the dentist, actually I don't mind, needles don't bother me, mouth, even had them in my nose when it was cauterized, darned teeth, another maintenance item LOL !

The one thing I recall right after it was extracted, boy I could not get those pain meds fast enough, oofla, did that hurt like heck, but then I got those meds, and laid down to rest. My long time farmer friend (whom passed away back in February) and his wife stopped by and he wanted to see if I could rake hay for him that day, and I had to refuse, which broke my heart, I NEVER turned him down, any time he needed me to help, before the regular job or after, he always appreciated whatever I did, and when he became ill leading up to his death, any time he called I was right there. I got in a tussle with a fellow working on our barn rebuild, both 2 pretty decent fellows too, one I really enjoyed working with, the other had a bug up his butt about my 9am starts on days I made early runs for this farmer, whom was ill. His sons were all working full time jobs, I was the only Class A CDL driver nearby that could run a 2 stick Mack. I unloaded on the guy, don't mess with friends or family, he never bothered me again, cripes I was up at 4 am made 1 run, got back to the yard, stopped home for a warm cup of something, then drive 30 miles to the other job with the barn and 9am is not all that bad, considering I had made prior arrangements, but some people in this life are so nasty, boy did I haul off on him, he ended up on the ground and I had him pinned, that's how much our long time friend meant to me, he was a friend of the family since we bought the place here, rented all our ground for years, and someone I admired most of my life, he was the epitomy of the american farmer. So I've digressed, I just remember that darned tooth and me having to say no, not so much the pain, but I felt it would not be a good idea for me to run his 3150 JD while on pain meds, down a county road and all, darned tooth LOL !!!!
