Stuck Ammeter

The ammeter (battery gauge) on my Farmall M wasn't showing any charge or discharge, no needle movement at all. Even with engine off and lights on the gauge wouldn't show any discharge. It's hooke up correctly based on the wiring diagrams posted to this site. It's only about 3.5 years old, having been bought from IH dealership (probably TISCO product).

I removed it and tapped on it to see if needle was free to move if it wanted. No movement. Interested, I removed the bezel from housing and found that the small disk that goes around the base of the needle had swelled up and split, basically locking the needle in place.

Has anyone ever had this happen? The tractor is still 6V positive ground and doesn't get run that much.

I'm going to check with the dealership to see if there is any kind of warranty, but chances are I'll be getting another $30+ ammeter.

Why IH? any auto parts will have a gauge.I bought a full set of gauges for around25 bucks from NAPA.Unless it's GOT to be genuine IH.'Dealer' parts are always the highest priced.

Don't be too sure about that. I went to 3(O'Reilly, Auto Zone, etc.)in Angola, IN looking for an ammeter. All the computer kids could find was a voltmeter. Finally got one at TSC.
