As some of you may remember, most of my wheat has a claim on it due to a dry fall and spring, and bitter cold winter.
I can swath and round bale it for feed, but my question is how good of feed is it? Right now it is just heading out, so I believe it is early enough, but is there a market for wheat hay? Obviously if it stays dry there probably will be. Another thought is will the wheat be stressed and have afla-toxin issues? I don't know if that even is an issue with wheat.
My option is to spray (kill) it and no-till beans in it.
Any thoughts out there? This is in Mid-Kansas. Thanks - Bob

I agree with Allan that Wheat makes good hay. Be careful as it's easy to desire to bale Wheat hay at too high moisture and it will heat up after baling.

Remember now, this wheat has an insurance claim on it....probably means he's got a really poor stand, so I doubt if he'll get much tonnage. The quality should be good but there isn't going to be much of it. Wheat makes good hay....to feed yourself. About the only time you can sell it is if no one else has any hay either. I"d spray it and save the organic matter and plant it to beans.

Do you have stock of your own? If so mow it down make sure it's cured and roll it up. If not spray or use your favorite tillage method. Are you in an area that falls under the first crop second crop stipulation? Ask your agent if is ok to put the fails crop to a secondary use.

The wheat for grain is the first insured crop. As long as he has had it appraised and stated his intentions to bale there should be no problems with 1st/2nd crop. Baling is considered "destroying" the first insured crop and there is no difference if baled, grazed, disked or no tilled into.

The baling/grazing becomes an issue in Prevent plant cases, not production losses.

If you have the cattle I'd graze it off. Free fertilizer and it lets your pastures get further ahead. If this year gets drier you may need that extra grass.

Good point GeneMo. That's I am a former agent, can't remember every thing. It didn't even register when I first read the post. Was just advising on the side of caution.
