racing mowers

how many of you have modified an old riding lawn mower to go a lil faster by pulley swaps? i have a white gt185 hydro, 18hp vtwin. wonder if the hydro would blow apart at speed? we live in the country, people ride 4 wheelers and thought would be funny to pass em with a rider mower. lmao.

My brother had a John Deere 57 probably ten years ago that was chain drive so we swapped sprockets for fun, did about 35 but he also put it in the ditch on the gravel as a little mower like that doesn't handle like a atv he didn't get hurt but that was the and of that, so it is possible just be carful.

My son did that to a 18HP briggs on a craftsman mower. It would scoot along faster than I wanted to ride it. We used to have lawn mower races at the county fair. It was ridiculous what some of those guys would do. Some would run 50-60mph. In the pulling division some guys would strap a V8 on a mower.

There is one here with a Honda 750cc motorcycle engine.'Plum Crazy'(purple in color). Its FAST.The owner claims it will do 70....Btw,it is also lengthened and lowered.

Here's a somewhat modified Cub Cadet belonging to a friend.

It's a puller, but it can also REALLY scoot(!)

too bad yt doesnt have a LIKE button! that cub has a bark, and a bite! looks like they set it in front facing back. is it a rotation direction issue?

Yeah - that V8 is indeed mounted "backward". This was done to get the correct input shaft rotation at the stock Cub Cadet rear end.

your exactly right. very dangerous. ive noticed all the youtube videos, driver has a helmet. theres one video, hes bee boppin thru his neighbor hood. hitting curbs! lucky we dont have curbs, just deep ditches. lol

My son (15 at the time )my uncle &I did this to acraftsman rider 3yrs ago ....pulled the trans axle put on a larger pulley -sheve it went really fast ...would smoke the tires on a wet blacktop driveway then take off on a wheelie ...how far and how high depended on the opperator and how lucky you felt ..its been parked thankfully for the last 2yrs ..

Bolens husky 3 speed stock out of the yard 10 hp Briggs , with gov. removed' pulley on engine... 2" on trans axle rear axle extended to 46" and off set .. front axle was made to be adjusted to add more weight on the right tire on turns

53 Mph on roads .. ( don't ask me how I know .. too darned fast for stock steering .. if ya build one make sure ya add hood pins .. my son almost lost a finger because this one didn't have it the first race .

Don't have a pic for now .. have to get them off my old computer .you may find some in archives here ....

I have an early 80's craftsman with a 12 hp OHV Tecumseh governed to 4200 rpm which tops out at 45 mph. It has an 8 inch pulley on the engine and a 4 inch pulley on the transmission (you have to get the drive ratio up while maintaining pulley surface area for the belt to grip). The transmission is a 5 speed peerless with the ring and pinion out of a 200 series dana transaxle. I separated out the clutch, brake, and gas pedals so that it shifts just like a manual car. I built it 8 years ago and it has quite a few miles on it now. The key to getting them to last is to use high temp molly grease in the transmissions to withstand the high input speeds and high temperatures that build up in the absence of active cooling. The only way to get good service out a belt is to use the Kevlar belts like the ones TSC carries. For high speed cornering I usually pin the front axle and space the rear tires out to widen the stance. Since the lawn tractors typically lack suspension, I have found that running 3-5 psi in the rear tires makes the ride manageable.
