I have a 9n that has been converted to 12 volt. I have replaced the resistor, the coil, the condenser. I can get power down to the coil but when the coil is placed into position on top of the distributor as soon as it makes contact I lose my power or shorts out. one or the other, anyway I'm not getting any power to the points. There is no spark when engine is turned over. Help !!
 
I don't think there is a wrong way to hook up the coil there is only one wire on top and one exit point on the bottom. this is a square type coil that sits directly on top of the distributor. I have looked at many diagrams but am still dumbfounded.
 
I am far from an expert on those fords, but you do realize that originally, 6 volt system used a resister and the coil basically operates on 3 volts. I am under the impression this is a front mounted distributor. You could sub a regular 12 volt coil mounted externally with a little handyman wiring otherwise you are going to have to adjust the resistance so you have about 3 volts coming into the coil when current is flowing through coil and points.
 
With the coil in place are you still getting power to coil? ie; Have you put a test light or volt meter to the wire on the coil with it in place?

I've had lots of these where the circuit checks good until a load is put on it. Might be a bad switch or other connection somewhere letting just enough current through until loaded.
 
Check to make sure the coil wire connection post on the side of the distributor is not grounded when the points are open.
 
Your description of your problem leaves a lot to be desired. What do you mean by "loses power" and "makes contact"?

You do understand that you will have voltage at the points only if the points happen to be open, right? How are you making your voltage measurements? With a voltmeter using ground as reference?
