Diesel additive

I have seen people recommend using two-cycle oil for adding lubricant to diesel fuel, I am looking for some specifics. Do you use oil for water cooled (outboards) or air cooled (chainsaws) and how much do you add? I filled my tractor last week with summer diesel and gave it about 4 oz. of outboard oil.

Why not just use an approved and recommended a diesel additive? If someone recommend cutting a steak with a chainsaw would you?

Here in mn we have at least 2% soybean oil, so we should be good to go without additives. The soy oil takes care of it.

I mix 1qt of 2 cycle into 50gl of diesel. Air or water cooled does not matter. The ratio could be mixed much stronger. A major ingredient of 2 cycle oil is Jet A. Nothing wrong with WalMart oils either.

I use Red Line catalyst in the recommended dose plus about 4 ounces of outboard 2 stroke oil per 20 gallons. This is in a Mercedes 5 cylinder that is going on 35 years old. It was not designed for this new lower lubrication fuel. Original injection pump with new injectors at 240k miles, now at 255k miles no problems. It has had the Red Line additive since new.

"It was not designed for this new lower lubrication fuel."

HOW do you know that... I would think it"s a German Bosch pump, and, of all IP"s ever made, they have a history of successfully handling some prettily exotic stuff!

I use one quart of Lucas Semi-Synthetic 2-cycle oil per 50 gallon of diesel. I get the oil at Oriellys autoparts. Also, add one quart of American Power Service diesel additive. Put these into a 55 gallon barrel and store in shop. Been doing this for years and years for 2 tractors and haven"t had to have a pump rebuilt yet. Tractors don"t smoke, start real good, never had algae, gelling or any other problem. Tom

Buick please tell us the difference! Also this is for anyone WILL ADDING 2CYCLE OIL OR ANY OF THE OTHER OILS OR ADDITIVES HURT ANYTHING? I have seen many post about this and no one says if it will hurt anything. Just wondering.

Bob

I had a GMC S15 with an Isuzu Diesel I would add a qt. of automatic transmission fluid every other tank I swear I could tell when the mix hit the injectors. Little engine went 300,000

The tests I read used Walmart marine 2-stroke-oil (for water cooled 2 strokes). Used it at a 200 to 1 ratio (200 parts diesel to 1 part 2-stroke-oil).

The prices in this test are out-of-date. For anybody who claims adding lube is "snake oil?" Kind of silly. Lube is now lower in diesel. Rotary injection pump makers like Stanadyne and Bosch clearly post their minimum lube specs. Modern low-sulfur diesel fuel is required by law to have fuel additives put into it to bring it at least close to those minimum specs. It's a matter of how much you trust fuel sellers to do it. Adding lube additive is cheap insurance IF you have a rotary-distributor pump like a Stanadyne, Bosch VE, CAV, etc. If you have an in-line pump - it is of less importance. It is the distributor part of the pump that suffers from the low lube.

As you can see by JDs post soy diesel is at the top of the list I have been runing 5% bio diesel for several years no problems am going to 10% per this spring run in chev duromax and jd diesels

A delicate emotional topic with closely held but polar opposed opinions that are not subject to change.

There were lubrication pump failures with the earliest batches of ULSD. That was a long time ago.
There are more engines that have went 500,000 miles or 10-20,000 hrs with just clean fuel. Then there has been with engines treated with elixirs and potions. Of course the snake oil fans feel they can guarantee their engines long life without doubt was due to the snake oil.
This group of people feel they have to treat themselves and their vehicles with vitamins and snake oil respectively. Something about quick easy gains without effort perhaps ?

I have run B-20,both on &off road for 15 yrs with no problems. The ATFs and 2 cycle oils have color in them and if used on road could be a very expensive game if you get pulled in-over and a dip test is done.

Dip test is for sulfur content. If they suspect the fuel going by color -they have to send it out to a lab to confirm - in order to find you guilty. No laws against 2 stroke oil in there. Might be able to void a few warantees though in some newer vehicles.

JD,they are saying COLOR(dye),as the fuel is the same here now.It is just for TAX purposes. They are not looking for sulfur.1/4 pint(dyed fuel) or less per 50 gal.will set it off.Min.$10,000 fine,so not worth it.Been pulled(checked) in at least 10 times in the last 3 yrs,so getting on to the routine.
